The Lighter Side / Re: Paper Mills
« on: Thursday 04 May 17 23:21 BST (UK)  »
There have been paper mills  in Tamworth on the Tame for a considerable length of time, the last one being Alders Mill, (right on the river) which closed not many years ago. There was also  Fisher's Mill at Kettlebrook (within 1/4 mile of the river) within the last 70 or so years. (My in-laws worked there) As for the 18thC, the Tamworth Herald would no doubt be able to help you more. Try them on line, (their historian is John Harper.)

Honestly, B-B, would you really want to be Queen of Tamworth?

At one time, I had at least 38 first cousins, none of whom shared my surname. The number is decreasing with time. My two sons also have none, but the picture changes with my three grandsons. here are no girls in the three generations of my line, but my only brother has one daughter and two grand-daughters

Mine have mostly been in farming, at least since  the 1560s, although one or two went back into leather at times, and even into silk in a menial way.

Got one or two Herdwick-coloured in my lot. One was excommunicated by Lichfield Cathedral Consistory Court.

So: you too have a load of Cobblers in your ancestry? I literally have, but some trees seem to metaphorically have 'em, too, don't they?
And you think you've got problems.  My family name derives from Cordwainer, which in fact a cobbler.

If your father was awarded the Q.P.M., then the force with which he served would have a record. However, if he had served for 23 years, he would be awarded the Long Service Medal. A Commendation for bravery is something else, which would be recorded, but which would not normally carry a "gong".

The first ting that comes to my mind is Grimsby. Possible?
