Tydfil is a woman's name that crops up now and again in Merthyr Tydfil, or in families with connections to Merthyr Tydfil. Although she has passed away now I knew a lady who was called Tyd.

Found this newspaper entry that may be of interest:

STOCKBRIDGE TURNPIKE.
NOTICE is hereby given, that a Meeting of the Trustees is appointed to be held, by adjournment, on Monday the 2d day of September next, at the Swan Inn, in Stockbridge, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon; at which time and place the said Trustees will then proceed to elect and appoint a Gate-keeper, in the room and place of John Garey, who has resigned.

There are quite a few references to Geary's / Garey's at the Hampshire Archives:

which shows the family at the Longstock / Stockbridge area. The wills in particular may help confirm family relationships.

In my experience the archive have been very helpful when responding to email requests.

In the 1841 Census Edward appears as Ed Gary, age 64, carpenter, in St Botolph, Bishopsgate (HO107; Piece 725; Book 10; Folio 4; Page 1). Mary is aged 58. Thomas, age 25, cabinet maker and Richard, age 16, errand boy are with them.

Good find! I was looking on the 1841 but couldn't find them. Annoyingly though on the Whether Born in Same County column, it does appear that the ennumerator puts 'Y' to indicate Middlesex, which doesn't confirm that Edward and Mary were from elsewhere.

I still think  the 1851 Stockbridge lead is very strong though, especially with the occupation, date and wife's name markers.

Over to you Laurence, what do you think?

There is also a marriage of a Richard Garey to Elizabeth Lawrence on 21 July 1811 at St Botolph without Bishopsgate (witnesses - Thomas Bowen and Ann Thingsnorth). This Richard may be related to Edward (brother?) and be of assistance.

It is conjecture, but there would appear to be a Richard as brother to the Edward baptised in Stockbridge in 1777. Richard was baptised in 1784, which fits with the later marriage date too.

The address on the 30th March 1851 census entry appears to be 3 Stepney Rents. But that doesn't mean that he can't have moved in the interceeding 8 months...? If it is the same Edward.
