Wow, Willow! Thank you so much. This will open up a lot for me.  :) According to Antoinette's  death record in California, her mother's maiden name was Smith. See here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VPJZ-83T

So that all adds up. I'm still not sure why she was using the Wilcox name. Maybe she grew up as a part of her uncle's family, and started using their name.

So I really appreciate your time and help. Thanks again.

I am almost sure that Martha's maiden name is Wilcox, especially now. Antoinette is my GG-grandmother and her daughter listed her name as Antoinette Beatrice Wilcox Jones. So Henry would be her brother. That should narrow the playing field and help find her parents, if we know two of the children. Also, Antoinette married Emmanuel Wolfson on 11-4-1901 in Leeds, England. Should have mentioned this in my first post. Thanks for all your help!

England / James Probert b. about 1783
« on: Tuesday 09 April 13 07:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has an idea on how to get over my worst brick wall. Here is the information that I have.

James Probert was born c. 1783 in England. He joined the British Navy during the War of 1812 and deserted. He was caught and sentenced to be executed, but escaped and swam the river into New York. There he married Asenath Stover and I have a pretty good history from then on. The question is who was he originally?

I don't have any idea where to go from here, and am not very familiar with research in the UK, so thought I'd ask here.

Thanks for any help you might have.........Hailey

Staffordshire / Marriage of Edward and Martha Jones and/or Martha's maiden name
« on: Tuesday 09 April 13 07:36 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to find information about this couple. Edward Jones born about 1849 in Wolverhampton, England married to Martha ??? born about 1850 in C???ley, Staffordshire, England. They had a boy, Richard in 1877-8 born in Dudley, Worcestershire, England, and then two daughters, Antoinette ("Netty") and "Polly" in 1879 and 1881 both born in Wolverhampton.

I found this much on the 1881 Census, but have not found the family after that. Nor have I found a marriage record or Martha's maiden name.

Any Ideas???

Dorset / Re: Info on William Stokes (b. 1845) possibly bastard?

Richard,

Thank you so much for the information. I was aware of baptism records for the two boys, but the James Stokes is a new piece for me. I don't know of a George Stokes in the family, the only brother of Eliza I have found is John. She also had two sisters, Caroline and Rhoda. Perhaps George is older and I just hadn't found him yet.

Do you know why George Sanford would have been baptized twice? The only thing I could think of was that they wanted him baptized in their home town.

I have a family bible that says George Stokes born 5 Sep 1842 son of Elize. The next entry is William Stokes, born 7 Jul 1845.

There is a bastardy recognizance for Eliza dated 8 Sep 1845 in which George Sandford is required to pay 5s/week. Given that these were done before the baby was born, it looks as if George Sandford was the father of both boys.

What did you mean "Given that these were done before the baby was born"? If the bastard recognizance is dated 8 Sep 1845, that would have been after both boys were born. If George Sandford is the father of both, perhaps William chose to record his grandfather as his father on his marriage license?

Also I have found two marriage records for William Stokes. They are three days apart and in different towns. Any ideas why?

Dorset / Info on William Stokes (b. 1845) possibly bastard?
« on: Monday 01 April 13 08:23 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on my G. G. G. grandfather, William M Stokes. He was born 7/17/1845. His mother is Eliza Stokes, daughter of William and Mary Stokes. His christening record shows no father, but his marriage record shows his father as William Stokes. That was his maternal grandfather, but I'm not sure if it is his father's name as well.  ??? His mother is connected to Bastardy records that I have no way of looking up and she seems to have another son George Sanford Stokes. His christening record also shows no father, but his marriage record shows his father as George Sanford and his mother as Eliza Stokes. It seems she may have had two sons by two different fathers and both took her maiden name.
Can anyone give me any advice? I'm fairly new to this and am not sure where to start. Thank you.
