Thank you. I had that passenger list already. That notation about Uncle Tom Duffy is confusing. It seems to me that Uncle Thomas Duffy had to be A brother to Johns father. (another crumb). BUT

How could Tom Duffy be a cousin to all unless Uncle Thomas lived with his son also named Thomas?

Thank you both CarolW and Aghadowery for your attention.

I will try to clarify my story.

First, let me say to CarolW that you do have the correct family. However, that was a later date. I have been told that my grandmother wanted to return to Scotland. Once there,  it took her a few months to realize  she made a mistake and wanted to return to the USA. (Grandpa was a good guy!)

My grandmother Esther Ferns was born in 1876 and was married to two brothers. The first husband was James Duffy b 4/24/1879 in Londonderry. At this time, I can only assume he and Esther were married in Glasgow, Scotland. I know James died there in 1912 but I don,t have documentation yet. They had children john, Elizabeth, Esther and Catherine. I have been told they also had an 11 year old daughter Mary that died within six months of James. Sadly enough, Esther's father John Ferns died in 1912 as well. she lost three love ones that year.

I have the ship passenger list for the Merion that left Liverpool, England on 1913. John Duffy b 10/3/1887 in Londonderry accompanied Esther Duffy and her four children. looking under a magnifying glass I could make out the words bros in law next to johns name.

John and Esther were married here in Pa, USA. My father James A Duffy b 6/10/1916 was their only child. john assumed the role of father to Esther's other 4 children.

To Aghadowery, my answer regarding Scotland's census. I could only find James, Esther and baby John in 1901 census. Scotland's 1911 census does not show on ancestry .com. Is there a site out there where I can find that census for free?

Thanks for any further help.

James duffy sr was married to Mary quigg on 12/5/1875. I know they hada son James born on 4/24/1879.he married my grandmother and lived in glasgow, scotland. I found him living there on the1901 census. He was 22.his wife esther was 24 and they had their first born, my uncle john 6 months. James died in 1912 and my grandmother came to nyc with her brother in law john that was born on 10/3/1887. He married her in pa and they had one child, my father . John and James were both born in londonderry and I have baptismal papers on both that took place in st Eugene's. I found Patrick and Mary's baptismal records and civil birth record. They also list James duffy and Mary quigg as the parents. Their sponsors are the same sponsors for john so I feel pretty certain they are all family. Now are there more. Where did they go? I can,t even find john till he showed up on the ship manifest as Esther's bros in law. Any ideas?

Please some one help. I know the duffy family was in derry from 1875 to 1887. I found baptism records for all at st Eugene's cathedral. James duffy and Mary quigg had at least 4 children. James, Patrick, Mary and john. I found James living in scotland married with a new baby in 1901. Any ideas as to how to find the others?

Wow! That could be the siblings. my grandfather was john Duffy born in Londonderry on 10/4/1887. I only know of his older brother James that was born on 4/24/1879.
Mother was Mary quigg. When john was born, they lived on 12 Rock Road.

I know James was living in Glasgow in 1901 with his wife Esther and new baby boy john. He was 22. I don't know where to look for 13 year old john.

Where did you find the possible other siblings?

« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
I found my great grandparents were married at st Eugene's in Londonderry on 12/5/1875. Afterwards I found they had a son James born 4/24/1879 (lived on Harvey street then) and my grandfather born and baptized at st Eugene's on 10/3/1887. (Lived at 12 Rock Road then).

My great grandfather was listed as James Duffey on marriage certificate and great grandmother was Mary mcQuig. On theis sons birth records, they appear as duffy and Quigg.

That is all. I don't see them again in any census. Any ideas as to where to look? Are there school records out there? Where? What schools? Please help me someone

Family History Beginners Board / Londonderry street location

I just started researching my family roots. My grandfather was baptized at st Eugene's in 1887. Address of 12 rock. londonderry, ire. His older brother was baptized at st Eugene's in 1879. His address was posted as Harvey street. I can find Harvey street but not rock. I was hoping to figure out a school that they possibly attended. Maybe there were other siblings. None of the census show the family. Any thoughts out there?
