London and Middlesex / Land Army information
« on: Thursday 29 February 24 10:27 GMT (UK)  »
I've gone back to verifying the details of my husband's Henderson line and have found out that his paternal grandmother was in the land army but cannot find any further details than what I believe is her discharge card.

She was Dorothy Thirza Kendrick and was born 28 Nov 1908.
The card shows that she was living at 6 Field Road, Forest Gate .
The start of employment is 29th Dec 1941 and end of employment 31 Aug 1942, I think the reason given is invalid mother.

Is anyone able to help me in finding out any more details about her time in the Land Army

Thank you

Thank you - I will try and find the transcript of the 1891 Census now I have a location.

I had found the Marriage so thats now confirmed fathers for William and Sarah, plus a maiden name for her. I did find a baptism in the right area with mother Frances and father William however on the marriage we have father Edward. In Census returns mother is Francis so wonder if William is his father's middle name?

Kent / The Moss family

Good morning

I am trying to locate the family of my husband's maternal great-grandmother and their whereabouts from 1891 onwards.

I know that Ada (his great-grandmother) is born in Sittingbourne, Kent on 18 Sept 1878 to William and Sarah Ann Moss. She is baptised on 27th October 1878.

I find Ada living with her mother, Sarah and her siblings, Frances, Sarah J, William and Alfred in Milton, Kent. There is no sign of William but Sarah is still married and she lists her occupation as B. Field Lab's wife. I believe this is be a brick field labourer. Many of the neighbours also have this occupation so assume that they are living in tied cottages close to the nearby brickworks.

I have no idea where William is in 1881 but I know he is not dead. I cannot find the family in 1891 or 1901 but by 1911 they have moved from Kent to Stratford, West Ham, London. William and Sarah are together with 3 boys.

I know that Ada marries George Henderson on the 30th May 1898 at St James, Forest Gate. In 1901, 1911 and 1939 they are living in West Ham and go on to have 3 children. Ada dies in January 1962.

Any help with finding their whereabouts between 1881 and 1911 would be gratefully received.

I'm now about to start searching for a marriage for William and Sarah.

Thanks in advance.

I've been looking through the newspapers to see what I can find.

I'm a bit confused by your last statement. I'm sorry if I've got it wrong, I'm dyslexic and sometimes numbers can jump around.

Quote
On the 1911 Census it gives her age as 28, so I'm wondering then if that's how old she was when she died? If she had been alive in 1911 she would have been 34/35. That would give a potential death date of 1883?

Perhaps I need to be looking for a marriage instead...

Are you suggesting that she died aged 28, and that she was entered into the 1911 census by accident. (Understandable, lots of people did it).

Because if she was born in 1876 and died aged 28, that would make her death year 1904, not 1883?

So was she born earlier than 1876?

Sorry thats me working it out wrong.

She was born 8th November 1876, so yes you are correct in a death year of 1904.

Yes she is written on the 1911 Census as Betsey Jackson aged 28. In the column under "children died" it is written one. Then the whole line is then crossed out so I'm assuming this was written in as a mistake.

There is a Lincolnshire death on GRO for a Betsy Jackson (Gainsborough RD) Sept qtr 1891 but she was only 1 year

Death Sep qtr 1891
Jackson    Betsy   age 1    Gainsbro'    7a   401

That could be the burial I found then as that was something like the 25th August 1891 but it only said Lincolnshire.

On the 1911 Census it gives her age as 28, so I'm wondering then if that's how old she was when she died? If she had been alive in 1911 she would have been 34/35. That would give a potential death date of 1883?

If she was born in 1876 then she cannot have died in 1871.

Sorry my mistake...1891
