Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can you date this family group please?
« on: Thursday 16 February 12 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
Is this a World War 1 photo group? The photo belongs to our family, but we are not sure which side of the family. Is it possible to date it? Sorry I cannot tell you anything about the original print details, as it was given to me as a copy, so there's only the clothing to go on.
Thanks, Maggie

Can anyone find a date for the death of Catherine H. Reed please?
She was born 1858 Nunnington, Catherine Hamilton Stamper.
Married Henry John Reed in 1879. Widowed 1911
Her last known whereabouts comes from the 1911 census- Kirbymoorside with her son John F. Reed and family.
Many thanks,
Maggie

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Edwardian Footman?

Thanks for your help everyone. I wondered if with all the young men leaving for the war, he may have got moved up the servant's promotion ladder faster than normally? He was in the war at some point, but not sure whether he enlisted early on, or was called up later. He would have been about 18 as a hall boy and 21 when the war started.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Edwardian Footman?

Can anyone help me with this  photo? Originally told he worked at Crathorne Hall, I found no trace of him there but did find him when 1911 census released at Swinton Grange Hall.
It show my husband's grandfather at work - possibly at Swinton Grange near Malton, N. Yorks.
Is this the uniform of a footman? as I have Ernest ( b. 1893) as a Hall Boy in 1911, but the uniform looks too grand for that role. Could he have been promoted up the servant heirachy, and what date?
Thanks, Maggie

Thanks for the update, it seems Ernest would have been at the bottom of the servant's heirachy, as a lowly Hall Boy, earning possibly 8 guineas a year in 1911.
I haven't been able to find any pictures of the Behrens, they obviously value their anonymity!

Thankyou for sharing those photos, the picture showing the Hallway is so atmospheric! You can really get the sense of the 'Upstairs Downstairs' age.
Do you know whether, at the outbreak of WW1, the young men of the domestic household joined up together?

Many thanks Inchcape Yorkshire for the wonderful information. I am scrapbooking the family history and the pictures will be a great help! I have a picture of Ernest in his domestic uniform, stood next to a grand looking gentleman- I wonder if this could be Clive Behrens? I will see if I can find a picture online.
