Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Re: MI Request for Middleton
« on: Thursday 29 June 06 20:27 BST (UK)  »
On the downside if I search for Mary Holmes (or similar) getting married between 1841 and 1851 in Leeds I get quite a few results. However I get NON for Abraham Scott or similar.

BUT if I do the same search for Bradford I get;

Mary Ann Holmes     Q2 1850  Vol 23, Page 178
Abraham Scott Q2 1850 Vol 23, Page 174

The Holmes entry is fairly clear, the Scott one less so - but I don't think it says Page 174, unfortunately.
Dash, close - but no cigar.

Lah,

If you goto familysearch.org and search for Sarah Scott's birth you will find a 'Pedigree Resource File' submitted by ;Sherry L. PETERSON  1132 E. Avenida Ellena Casa Grande Arizona 85222-1107

This says;
Sarah Scott Female.
Birth; 1/31 Jul 1843, Warter
Christening; 27 Oct 1844, Warter
Death; 31 Oct 1915, Hanover Twp,Wexford,MI
Burial;  Cornell Cemetery,Buckley,MI

Parents; Abraham Scott and Mary HOLME
Sarah married John Hudson ~1864, but I guess you know that !

If you click the 'Mary Holme' link the only extra info is that she died 5 Dec 1857. I had a quick search for her on the '41 census. <Lose all my work beyond this point and have to start again !> All I could find was this lot;
Living at Naby(?) End, Rothwell, Middleton, Yorks;
John HOLMS, 60, Colliery Labourer, Born Yorkshire (like rest of household)
Elizabeth ditto, 45
David ditto, 20,
George ditto, 20
Mary ditto, 15
Ester ditto, 13
Ralph ditto, 6
Squiers(?) ditto, 9 - odd he not listed in age order unlike the rest. Perhaps a cousin or something?

In an attempt to sort out the surname confusion I searched for Ralph in the '51 census, but couldn't find him. However there is a suitable match for George;
Living at Jackson Lane, Morley, Yorkshire;
George HOLMES, Head, Married, 29, Engine Worker, Woolen, Yorkshire - Middleton
Sarah Ann ditto, Wife, Married, 24, Yorkshire - Morley
Edward ditto, Son, 10, Scholar, Yorkshire - Beeston.
Of course this raises other questions namely;
1.If same George then how come he was living with parents in '41 and has a 10 year old son by '51
and
2.Was Sarah Ann really 14 when she had Edward?
So might not be the correct person.

Possibly you need to get in touch with Ms Peterson !

Hope this helps.

The Common Room / Bryden/Cowper bookmark/stub
« on: Wednesday 28 June 06 19:40 BST (UK)  »
My maternal grandmothers great aunt, Julia St John Wright (b 1855 Priors Marston) married an author called Henry Anderson Bryden (b 1854 Banbury).

My Great Aunt Kate, who I vaguely remember from my childhood, was staying with the Bryden's at the time of the 1901 census. But I digress, in the course of researching their descendants I paid to retrieve a file on them from an archive at Yale.

Included in the file is the copy of a book written by Bryden (in 1923) called 'Bryden and Cowper Family History'. The book(let) is 23 pages and there is also a family tree (unfortunately spread over 5 pages and poorly photocopied in terms of how it all fits together!). Obviously this is not my family so, although interesting, it has not really helped me with my reasearch (luckily the other contents of the file have!).

However it may be of interest to someone else, so I am placing this stub here in case someone searches for Bryden or Cowper in the future.

The Bryden line goes back to John (b 1690 Annandale, Dumfriesshire) - this line includes Thomas Radford (of hospital fame) and the Cowper line back to William (b 1485, lived Woodend, Blakesley, Northants). The tree seems to include a lot of military men, including one holder of the VC - Capt. R.P. Roupell and at least 3 M.C.'s. They are mainly in the Northants/Warwicks/Oxon area in earlier times, but all over later on.

Hopefully someone will stumble over this one day and all this typing will have been worthwhile :-)

Cheers

OK, thanks a lot.  I presume that should actually be Hawksworth, Leeds as there is a Vesper Road there - if so it's only about 10 mins from my office, so I could go one Tuesday evening after work !!

many thanks.

Gill,

Update; found the birth of 'a' Henry Powis in 1808 in Gravesend, Kent on familysearch. So I guess this could be my chap. If so his parents were James Powis, Jnr and Mrs.James Powis (very helpful :-) )

There is also a Charles in 1804 in St Giles London with James Powis and Ann Powis, so this could be them I suppose.

This is the sort of thing where logically you would 'assume' it's them - but it's far from concrete !!

Hi all, thanks for all the help - I'm certainly not short of ideas now!

Inid/Sylviaann ; Good tip on the LDS Centres. Sylviaann where is the LDS in Leeds, and do they do "late night" closing at all ?!?

Gill; 'My Powis' line descends from Charles Horlick Powis (b 1806 in Greenwich, Kent), who also had a brother Dr.Henry Samuel Powis (b 1810, same place) but I don't know their fathers name. They were later in Surrey, Lambeth, Berks - that I know of. One of the Powis' daughters married Stephen Griffiths and their son was my 'Uncle' Cyril - actually my Grannies uncle but I remember him from my childhood as he lived with them after coming back from Kenya. I can't see an Ealing link. More here;  http://www.tla-net.demon.co.uk/family/1345.htm (the father who's name I don't know!).

Downside; Yes I've made a few mishtakes along the way - most notably getting the wrong Thomas Moorby (my great grandfather) - luckily a) my Uncle spotted the error and b) they were cousins so it wasn't a complete waste of time investigating the wrong one! Luckily my paternal grandmother had already 'done' a lot of her side of the family - so I've been able to cross reference a 1/4 of my research - and I've found some errors in Gran's work, well more like flights of fantasy than actual errors!  Also there are children who died young who are not on any census and I only know about them from my grans research therefore, as you suggest, there are probably the same scenarios on the lines from my other three grand parents that I don't know about.

Again, many thanks to you all.

Stephen

Hi,

Thanks for the further info. Yes I've used familysearch - in fact I'm constantly on it to find bits and pieces.

I think my best bet, as I live in Yorks and have plenty of reles from Gods Own County, is for me to pop along to Northallerton and see what I can find. Then when I have personal first hand experience of what's involved I might feel bold enough to ask other people about other areas .... :-)

Thanks again to you both.

Sorry, yes I mean 1900 ! Sorry, I don't know of any Ake's after that time. I read your post 'cos I have a historical (non family related) interest in Constable Burton.

Cheers.

Hi,

Can't really help I'm afraid. However in the course of looking I did notice that Norman D. is actually Norman Donald, if born in Leyburn district in Q2, 1890. You probably know this, but this is just in case you didn't ..... !

Cheers.
