World War Two / Service Record Help
« on: Saturday 02 July 16 16:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

My fathers WW2 service shows that his regiment (294 Co Pioneer Corps) landed in Normandy 21 July 1944.

Prior to this they were based in Richbrough working on the Mulberry Scheme.

His record then states the company moved to Bernieres on 23 July 1944 and then on 17 August 1944 they were working on WHITE beach.

Which of the Normandy landing beaches was WHITE please?

Thanks
Helen

Hi John

Yes, that's my Thomas. He emigrated to Australia with Harriett and I am in contact with a descendant who has confirmed he is definitely the right Thomas.

It's his earlier wife (or wives) that I am trying to trace as neither appear to have died but are not on census returns either.

Thanks
Helen

Hi Suz

Thomas was born 11/4/1834 in Liversedge.

Parents were Samuel Porritt (b 1809 Scarborough) and Mary Parkinson (b 1812 Liversedge) who married 22/7/1830 in Liversedge.

His siblings include Michael, Noble, Isaac, Alfred, Louisa, Walter and Merinda.

Thanks
Helen

Thanks Suz

No children that I can find.

I have a possible second marriage for Thomas 19/1/1863 to Martha Middleton in Bradford.  The certificate also says he is a widower.

I cannot find Thomas with Mary Jane or Martha on 1871 census anywhere!!!!

I am beginning to wonder if the 1861 census is NOT my Thomas although its the only entry that fits with him being born April 1834.

Thanks
Helen

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Thomas Porritt 1861 Census Help
« on: Tuesday 03 May 16 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello All.

Can anyone help me decipher what it says for Thomas Porritt marriage status on the 1861 census

RG9/3404/110 p 19

I think it says married as the M is the same as others on the page but it has been transcribed as Widowed.

I have him marrying Mary Jane Peacock at Birstall in 1852 and can find no trace of her death prior to 1861 census.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Malcolm

Please could you post details of how you went about obtaining the medals.

My great grandfathers WW1 medals were returned to the MOD as he no longer lived with his wife when they were issued.

Thanks
Helen

Thanks
