JJ, I feel admonished! As you can see, I am picking up this thread after five years away, and not getting any messages because I had changed email addresses. The parental maiden name was irrelevant to the search, I deemed, as W H Adamson was an adult when he may have left the UK and this would not be revealed in censuses, etc.

My apologies to all if I seem to have ignored posts - don't receive automatic notifications of replies and have been moving countries myself so neglecting Rootschat and family tree. Still looking for William H Adamson born to John and Mary Ann Adamson in Lambeth in 1856 and last spotted in Lancashire in 1881.

Any migration to Canada or anywhere is pure speculation on my part but I cannot find a likely death or marriage in the UK and the family had a history of marine engineering and other connections with maritime trade.

Sorry for late reply  - haven't checked rootschat for many weeks. Yes, have ascertained parents as John and Mary Ann (nee Cooper). Still haven't got anywhere with William H, last found in 1881 census.

Thanks, Prue. I'm pretty sure this is my great grandmother, Sarah, and the dating and location seems to match - the family moved around following ship building and were in Manchester around then.

Cheers

Yes, that makes sense. I was probably a bit fanciful about the pram.

Excellent, China, that confirms my hunch.  Most likely relative resided up that way definitely in 1873 and 1876 when she had children, and left before 1879. I wondered if it was a pram she was holding on to, which may rule out an unmarried woman?

Any ideas about the date of this portrait? The firm in Manchester operated under the name from 1871 onwards, but curious to know when people would date the bustle and hat etc

Thanks for thinking of me, Dawn - sorry, only just checked messages. Really appreciate you looking. The info about Sarah's death in 1836 sounds particularly relevant as I couldn't find her on the GROs. That's wonderful...

You clearly know your way around! Yes, the insured William was his eldest grandson and the brother of my GGgrandfather. William snr's will mentions monies in government funds, various freehold and leasehold properties (I know he paid land tax in Clapham), but no mention of insurance as such. He left his trade (shop, goods, etc) to his son, John (father of William, and twins John (my GGG) and James).

I'll have a look at Guildhall records to see if apprenticeship records apply, but I wonder, would family have been apprenticed as such, or was that more of an economic contract not necessary if it was a family member?

Another lead worth my following is that all of William snr's children were baptised as non-conformists and most of the baptisms are recorded at Dr William's library.
