I have already had a look at findmypast, and I found a record of an Edward Ferguson Leaving Liverpool in June 1912, arriving in Sydney on the SOMERSET. The age matches (23 at the time).

The story my mother told me was that he was going to travel to the US on the Titanic, but decided to travel to see his step sisters in Australia, instead. (Not to sure of what to make of this story).

Then the story that he left in 1904/5 and went to Fremantle, WA first surfaced. I can't find record of this on findmypast.com.

I found that record you mentioned on the IGI, and that is the record I need to substantiate. If there was place to search births, by Mother's and father's name, then I would be certain that marriage was important.

According to Emerald Ancestors Sarah Royal married a William Edward Ferguson in 1875, so this has me doubt whether this is my Great-Granfather.

Lastly, I found a record in the Brisbane hospital register of a Sarah Clements (Sarah Ferguson, married a Clements and lived in Brisbane) in 1900, so I am thinking of checking that particular information out, as well.

Sorry about the long post...It explains how far I am along the path.

I do most of my genealogy myself, from home on the Internet, and generally venture out to visit libraries and such like, around my home town of Nottingham. But I am struggling getting started on the Belfast arm of my family tree.

My Grandfather Edward Ferguson was born in Belfast in 1888 and emigrated to Australia in 1904/05 or 1912 (This is hotly debated in my family). He moved to Australia, because his 2 step-sisters, Sarah and Jean (supposedly), from his father's previous marriage (he also supposedly has a half-brother, no-one knows any details about this person other then he may have died young).

His father was Edward Ferguson and mother was James Adams and they were married in 1881. We have the marriage certificate for this marriage. On the marriage certificate it states that he was of full age. A copy of the marriage details is on the "Fergusons of Belfast" site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~colin/FergusonsOfIreland/Belfast.htm

The problem we have is that I am struggling finding an good place to search for my Great-grandfather's first marriage, hopefully an age, and therefore a birth date (certificate, etc) before spending a lot of my hard-earned cash.

I joined Emerald Ancestors for a month to trial what they had and to try to find more information, I can find some birth information for a Sarah Ferguson, but after 1876, it seems non-existent. I need to find the other children of Edward to confirm the mother's name, and I believe they are older then this.

Emerald Ancestors has, however, given me some more potential information regarding my Grandfather's family.

I could join the Ulster Historical Federation, but I am not too sure that it will get me the search I am after, and as you have to pay for each detailed search, it could get quite expensive.

Does the UHF have a better search once you join, which search for birth records by father's name, or is there somewhere better for me to search.

Lastly, as the area they lived in is Shankill, is there a good place to search through the 1901/1911 Census. I have been to a few sites, but not come up with anything yet?

Thanks for any help.
