It is not so odd really given the history of this family! In any event when away from home he wouldn't have been the first man in history to deny he was married.
I have not purchased the marriage certificate, which you know are expensive - and often quite unnecessary. I have purchased very many and, although new to particular this list, I am an experienced researcher and investigator.
William Holland's 'vitals' have been taken from the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census.
His marriage was established via BMD. He is ONLY William HOLLAND recorded as having married a woman named BRIDGET durin the relevant period. IGI confirmed the actual date and details.
Also of significance was the fact that their eldest living child (their MAY have been a stillbirth or young death as well - as yet to be confirmed) was ELIZABETH HOLLAND B at DERBY - MAR 1844 vide 19 3(35)1 (BMD). This makes the marriage seem most favourable, if not certain.
Another, later child of the marriage was also shown to be at DERBY, but most were born in Birmingham.
I note that several HOLLAND surnames appear in IGI for LEWES around that time but not, unfortunately, the one I am looking ofr. As Lewes is relatively small, and there are not many Churches (two as I understand it) I was hoping that a quick look at the PR's would ewither resolve the matter, or point the way forward.
