Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: William HOLLAND b Lewes, Sussex Abt 1812-15
« on: Thursday 18 September 08 10:20 BST (UK)  »
It is not so odd really given the history of this family! In any event when away from home he wouldn't have been the first man in history to deny he was married.
I have not purchased the marriage certificate, which you know are expensive - and often quite  unnecessary.  I have purchased very many and, although new to particular this list, I am an experienced researcher and investigator.
William Holland's 'vitals' have been taken from the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census.
His marriage was established via BMD.  He is ONLY William HOLLAND recorded as having married a woman named BRIDGET durin the relevant period.  IGI confirmed the actual date and details.
Also of significance was the fact that their eldest living child (their MAY have been a stillbirth or young death as well - as yet to be confirmed) was ELIZABETH HOLLAND B at DERBY - MAR 1844 vide 19 3(35)1 (BMD).  This makes the marriage seem most favourable, if not certain.
Another, later child of the marriage was also shown to be at DERBY, but most were born in Birmingham.

I note that several HOLLAND surnames appear in IGI for LEWES around that time but not, unfortunately, the one I am looking ofr.  As Lewes is relatively small, and there are not many Churches (two as I understand it) I was hoping that a quick look at the PR's would ewither resolve the matter, or point the way forward.

I have not applied for her marriage cert yet - this family have proved to be a nemesis to me and, having already spent a fortune on certificates (to estasblish that their yougest daughter was my Gt Grandmother), I thought a look-up would sort it - as it has in the past. (I am new to this list - not genealogy. I have many years experience in research and investigation).  Equally, the Derby certificates I have purchased for this era are not always helpfull.  For example they usually record dates of birth as "Of Full Age."
The only "Bridget" to marry a "William HOLLAND" during the relevant period according to BMD was Bridget Hoyland at Derby - on the date given. There are NO OTHERS recorded.
Their eldest daughter, Elizabeth, was also born at Derby two years later vide Mar 1844 19 3(35)1 - making this marriage seem very favourable.
The only consistent thing about her is that she states she was born in Bungay abt 1819.  I understand there are only 2 Churches in Bangay, so I thought it an easy task for someone to look through their PR's for 1819 +or- 2 yrs.  I hold quite a lot of Derbyshire PR's & I do this regularly - it often saves £7 or £10 that does not need to be spent - after all this can be an expensive hobby!

Sussex Lookup Requests / William HOLLAND b Lewes, Sussex Abt 1812-15
« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 17:14 BST (UK)  »
This subject is my 2x Gt GFather.
He was married to a Bridget HOYLAND b abt 1819 at BUNGAY, Suffolk (lookup request posted there).  The marriage was at DERBY on 10-10-1842.
She is not shown before 1861 census, but is in 1871 & 1881, living at Birmingham.
William Holland was shown in different places in the 1841 & 1851 Census.  He was described as a traveller in Jewellery and similar in hardware (1851).  After this he is shown as a HAWKER.
Both Wm & Bridget do not appear in 1891 or 1901 - presumably they died before this in Birmingham - where Holland was a common name.
He consistently states he was born in Lewes, Sussex.
I suspect both are from the travelling fraternity as two sons later became Showmen's labourers.

I would be obliged if SKS could do a PR lookup for me in the Lewes PR's, or for any further info etc.

Regards

Suffolk / Bridget HOYLAND b Abt 1819 Bungay

She is my 2 x Gt Gr Mother.  She was married at Derby, 10 Oct 1842 to William Holland and is shown in 1861, 1871 & 1881 census living in Birmingham.  She consistently states she was born in BUNGAY abt 1819, but I have failed to trace her.
Searches of Derbyshire show many Hoylands, but none too consistent with this subject.  Those Hoylands (perhaps this is a derivation of Ireland?) seem to be of the traveling fraternity - horse dealers and the like.
Two of the sons later born to her were showmen's labourers and her husband, William HOLLAND b Lewes, Sussex abt 1812,  is shown as a traveler (in Jewelery and then Hardware in the 1851 & 61 census.  After that he is shown as a Hawker, so there is at least a possibility of this.
I would be obliged if SKS would do a lookup in the PR's of Bungay, or any further suggestions etc.
Thanks
