The Common Room / Re: Thomas Meleady's occupation

My father was a 'miller' in a big factory - it meant he operated a milling machine which did precision cutting out of parts for xray machines and the like. It was a skilled job requiring understanding of technical drawing & use of the machinery.

When asked for official forms what his job was he always said 'Miller setter operator'.

Maybe your man used a similar machine & thought of himself like that.

The Common Room / Re: Where was Green Street, Chelsea?
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
Heywood, that is fantastic! All my family (both sides) lived in Chelsea from the mid 1850s onwards so this has really helped me to see it in context. Such a quick reply too.

Thank you SO much, it makes them seem much more real - now to verify they are actually mine!

Very much appreciated

The Common Room / Where was Green Street, Chelsea?
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a family who might be mine in the 1851 census living in Green Street, parish of St Luke's, Chelsea, Middlesex. Googling it just brings up Green Street in Newham. Can anyone tell me where it might have been please? Just idle curiosity really as I have the general area, but I'd be very grateful if someone could point me to it.

Thank you

Just to add my 2 penn'orth as my mother would say - when I was at school in the 50s & 60s I was taught 'Yours faithfully' in a business letter or to a stranger - addressed Dear Sir or Madam. To a named person who you knew, it would be the less formal 'Yours sincerely'. Close relatives - (in my family) 'love'.

People from the generation in question and even up to the 60s tended to use what we would think of as quite formal language. You only have to look at the newspapers of the time!

The Common Room / Re: 1921 census

I've been very pleased with the 1921 census for a few reasons: 1) I don't have to subscribe to FindMyPast to access the records so I think the price per record is very good value. I don't know why people are complaining, £3.50 is the price of a coffee in some places    2)  The site didn't crash when I went on the day after its release   3) I was able to see enough free info (who else was in the household) to decide which were 'my' records so didn't waste money     4). Best of all - it confirmed that GGranny Sweeney WAS born in Carlisle as my mother always said, in spite of various censuses stating Newcastle or Northumberland - so I was able to find her birth on the GRO and will be getting the bc as she is a bit of a mystery. For me that small detail was a big leap forward!

Be careful with the lead letters, quite a few on my father's stone (50 years old) have fallen off over the years.

Technical Help / Re: WhatsApp query
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
I hardly ever use the WhatsApp camera, I find it easier to take a photo on my phone in the regular way then share it. That way I can crop it or adjust the contrast etc. Cropping is useful if it's a big screenshot.

I've found that any app that can take pictures always needs permission. And all WhatsApp pictures I receive go into my gallery into a WhatsApp folder that was already there. All pictures I take appear in my camera or screenshot folder. But I know all phones work differently.
