Surrey / Re: James W Sayers married Ethel Maud Honey Sole - Croydon 1946
« on: Saturday 16 January 16 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Thank you so much!  That answers some of the questions I had.  Yes he would have been too old to join the army during WW2 but probably was an enlisted soldier in WW1.
After the short conversation I had with my friend about her Aunt, I would suspect that they had been living with each other for some time.  They finally got married in 1946 which is quite a large gap.
Thank you again

Hi
No I haven't got the wedding certificate yet.  I am researching this information for my friend who is clearing her Aunts home - Elizabeth Mary Sayers.  Yes James and Ethel are no longer with us so there is no problem.
I am also awaiting Elizabeth's birth certificate from my friend but I thought while I was waiting it was worth my while putting a post up on Rootschat just in case the names rang a bell with anyone.

Surrey / James W Sayers married Ethel Maud Honey Sole - Croydon 1946

Help!
I am trying to find out further information about James W Sayers and Ethel Maud Honey Sole.  I know they were married in 1946 in Croydon and that Ethel was married before and that her surname in 1946 was Adams.  I also know that Ethel had a child in 1934 called Elizabeth Mary Sayers- definitely out of wedlock as she was already divorced from her first husband Cecil Arthur Adams. Also from Elizabeth's surname I can assume that Elizabeth was James Sayers daughter but that is where my information ends.
I have tried to find out more about James W Sayers but I have conflicting information.  Can anyone help me?
I do know that Ethel's parents were Charles Sole and Elizabeth Lydia Honey.
Did James W Sayers serve in the forces in WW2?  Where was he born and when?  I have so many questions so any help would be fantastic!

World War Two / Private Albert Douglas Dunn-Prisioner of War- POW Number 32629
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help us find more information about my late Father-in-Law Albert Douglas Dunn.  We know he was in the Queen's Royal Regiment and his army number was 6105413.  We also know that he spent a number of years as a prisoner of war and due to the recent free records available on Ancestry I have found out that he was  in Camp Type Stalag; Camp Number 357; Camp Location Oerbke, Lower Saxony.
Prior to his death some 20 years ago my husbands remembers that he said he celebrated his 21st birthday in a camp and that he with thousands of others was forced march for many months.  My husband remembered him saying that he escaped whilst on this forced march with a cousin that he met in camp who came from Canada.
We have absolutely nothing else about Doug's war years, not even his medals which we assume he collected but that too we don't know. We were amazed that he was in Stalag but whether it is a type of camp or the one you see depicted in war films we haven't got a clue! Also to escape under those circumstances must have been something.
Can anyone help with any information and advice.
Many thanks

World War One / Help and information request regarding found WW1 medals!
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me.  My friend is clearing her Aunt & Uncle's home and in the process has found four medals which look like they were treasured by her relations.  She has passed them to me to look into as the name/s don't ring any bells with regards her direct family.  She suspects that the name on the medals relates to her Aunt's family but that is all the information I have!
I'm afraid I know nothing about medals so I am going to apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge!
Two medals are definitely WW1 as I think I found details on the WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards -
The information around the medals is:- 71683 SPR.A.WHITE.  R.E
All I have been able to find is that I think it relates to an Arthur White in the Royal Engineers.
If anyone can find out any more information I would be grateful.

Also there are another two medals. One with Queen Victoria and another with Edward VII so I am suspecting this was before WW1.  They both have South Africa on the back of the medal and the Queen Victoria medal has two bands above it stating 'Orange Free State' & 'Belmont'
The information around these medals reads:- 6649 Pte A. WHITE.  GREN: GDS: (Queen Victoria medal) & the same for the Edward VII but it has expanded the gren gds to Grenadier Guards.

I wonder if A White was a regular soldier and not an enlisted one for the war.

Can anyone help me in any way.  Unfortunately I have no family information so any info I can pass on to my friend would be a start.
Thanks
BoBo

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Henry Shrubsole
« on: Monday 10 January 11 13:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Bultera
so sorry for the delay.  I had a member of the family in hospital over the Xmas and New Year hol and I really haven't had much time to spare.

So sorry to hear about your loss.  We too started looking into our family tree after my husbands Dad died and left very little info regarding his family.

Regarding your great grandfather John Spencer Martin Shrubsole.  He was born on 21st Dec 1895 in Wandsworth.  he was one of 12 children of Henry Shrubsole b.23/2/1862 & Emily Smith.  He married your great great grandmother Florrie M Thomas in 1920.  I have no information after that point so if you do I would much appreciate it to.

Henry Shrubsole's father was also a Henry Shrubsole born in 1830 in Denton, Kent.  He married Eliza Curtis in 1859 and they had 5 children of which their first born was Henry.

If you would like further info regarding the other siblings of John I will be more than happy to supply that too but I don't know at this point how much info you would like.

Hope this was of some help.

Many thanks for your help.  It was in freebmd that I found their marriage but it was only after my sharing of information with my Australian historian that I confirmed that it was John Williams that she married.
Can anyone find John Williams birth?  I suspect that he was born in the UK not in Australia.
Thanks

London and Middlesex / Re: Joseph Shain - Census look up please
« on: Sunday 06 June 10 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks for the info so far.  Really informative and is filling the gaps.
As far as my records go I think that Gallop is actually Gilbert.
I agree with you Carole I think I will need to get a birth certificate for one of the children.  I know that Mary Ann died a Shain as I have found her death certificate info but between 1856 and 1860 she must have married Joseph and I can't find any record of his marriage.
Thanks again for everything.
