Devon / Rafaels of Devon
« on: Saturday 15 October 16 12:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Is anyone familiar with Rafael families in Devon? I have Joan Rafael born 1748 in Hemyock to John and Ann (she also has a sister, Elizabeth, born 1752). Obviously this is an unusual name for Devon, and I often find other Rafaels spelt Raffles, Raffil, Raphel etc (my ancestor Joan's surname is spelt Radfield in one marriage record)

I cannot find any more information on Rafaels in Hemyock, but have found a family in Culmstock around the 1680s. Does anyone have information on the origin of this family?

Many thanks
Samuel

Thank you very much! Arskow is an interesting surname. Re There being Williams born in 1786 and 1793, was it common for families to have two children with the same name?

Hello all

I need your help in locating some of the Webb family who were living in St Pancras at the end of the 18th century. I have a record of William Webb marrying Avery Colston in 1817, and it was solemnised in the presence of Moses Webb (the handwriting is a little unclear, I have attached an image). I have found records stating that John was born in St Pancras to John Webb and Elizabeth in 1790, and that a Moses Webb also had 4 children in St Pancras between 1790 and 1801 by his wife Mary. However, I cannot find records of birth or marriage for either Moses or John. Could anyone help me out or suggest reasons why I'm having difficulty here?

Best wishes

Samuel

Thank you all very much for your research! I had tried a similar approach with the Alices and had Alice Pingstone down provisionally, so it's nice that you came to the same conclusion! Gives me more hope too as Alice Pingstone's mother is Ann, which is also the name of Alice's youngest daughter.

Hi Monica

Interesting on the Eliza baptism! Hadn't seen that before. I did have the 1841 census; what's really annoying is that I can't find anything on those children either. Do you think there's possibly another spelling of Hutchison which is frustrating my search?

Hi all

I'm trying to trace my 4th Great Grandfather, William Hutchison, who was born in Montrose around 1791. He married a woman called Alice from Tiverton, Devon at some point before 1816, and had moved down to Tiverton by the 1841 census. By her he had five children, the first, Elizabeth, being born in Scotland in 1816. I can't find a Baptism record for either him or Elizabeth or a marriage record for William. Do you have any pointers for where I should be looking or something I may be missing out on?

Best Wishes
Samuel

True, although I am interested in trying to find out more about Mary. She must be related somehow so it's worth digging!

Thank you all so much for your quick replies! I'm not sure about Mary Colston. I can't find any record of her outside of the marriage certificate either. However, I think BookBox might be on to something with Avery Colson in Caxton. As Avery is such a rare name it seems unlikely that this wouldn't be the person I'm searching for! Thank you all very much for your help.

Hi everyone

This piece of handwriting has been plaguing me for a while. It's attached to the 1851 census entry for Avery Colston (1788-1860) who was born in Cambridgeshire. I can't work out if the text after 'Cambridge' refers to a town in Cambridgeshire or a part of Cambridge, and I also can't work out what it says. I can't find a birth registration for her either, and she dies before the 1861 census so have no further info! Any help would be greatly appreciated

Best wishes
Samuel
