London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: DENT'S from Westminster

Hi,

Thankyou very much for your help, Valda.

Yes, I was thinking that the St Martin in the Fields marriage was more likely. As there does not seem to be any other family connection to London itself.

Elizabeth Smith Dent is alive in 1851 census and lists her place of birth as Cobham, Surrey. She is living with her married daughter, Sarah Rumbol.

Are the the Burial records for John and Martha Dent on IGI?

I think that the Thomas Dent that you found was a witness at Sarah Den't marriage.

Thanks so much for that.

well, I've just found a reference to the case in 1842 and Phillip Blunt was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing bread & wheat in Hewelsfield. So is it the same man? Unfortunately, there's no age given for him as there is for some of the other people convicted. There's an Alexander Blunt named in the list of people acquitted at the end of the report, but no way of knowing if it's for the same offence.

 :-\

Thanks heaps for that Osprey.

That's a bit sad 7 years for stealing bread and wheat ...  :( Do you know what Transportation was though? Does it mean he had to go and work in another country like Australia ....  ???

I think that it must have been the same Philip Blunt - it would explain why he didn't marry until about 1850 when he was 29. I have only found one Philip Blunt born in Hewelsfield so far ...

I did notice that there are a few other Blunt's connected with the Gaol in Hewelsfield in 1842.

Can I ask where you found that reference?

Have you any idea where Ann Blunt was born?
As in 1851 Amelia, with 2 illegt. children and Christopher with wife Amelia and children, are both in Wales. 1841 Christopher is in Wiltshire.

I am having trouble finding Amelia in 1841. I was hoping that maybe they are with possible relatives who could have brought them up when Ann died 1828. I hate to think they ended up in a workhouse :(

Trish

Hi Trish,

Ann Blunt was born 1799 in Alvington to parents Thomas and Susanna. I'm not sure if they ended up in workhouse or not, I hope that they had some relatives too as living in a workhouse or orphanage would have been a miserable existence.

Yes, I did notice that the other siblings ended up moving to Wales too ... Christopher Blunt lived in Woolaston for about 20 years and it looks like Amelia did too.

I noticed when I was searching for Philip Blunt on the Gloucester Records Archives Database that Christopher Blunt is on some non-conformist catalog's too.

Do you know exactly what non-conformists were?

I also noticed that you are researching the Shaws?

Thanks,

I have found Philip Blunt from Hewelsfield in a Gaol in 1842 .... perhaps that might be why he changed his name.

I noticed that there are a few workhouses around Gloucester but none in the Forest of Dean ...

Thanks,

Rebecca

I just thought that I would add -

This afternoon I searched the last name Blunt on the Gloucester Genealogical Archives Database ( http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Search.aspx ) and found ......

Philip Blunt from Hewelsfield in Gaol in 1842!!!

Perhaps that's the reason he changed his name. I'm not sure what for or for how long he was in there .... but it answers some questions.

It looks his brother Christopher was a non-conformist too.

It's very interesting ....

Gloucestershire / Philip BLUNT b. 1822 Hewelsfield

Hi,

Philip Blunt was born to unmarried mother Ann Blunt in Hewelsfield, 02 Feb, 1822 he had two other illegitimate siblings Christopher Blunt (b.1820) and Amelia Blunt (b. 1818).

Ann Blunt was born 1799 and died in 1828. So I am trying to find out where orphans would have gone to live in Hewelsfield/Forest of Dean at that time.

I also believe that sometime in the late 1850's Philip Blunt changed his name to Philip Powell while living in Cardiff, Wales. It seems like Philip Blunt disappears and turns into Philip Powell.

Does anyone know of any family connections between the same Blunt family and the last name Powell?

It seems like I have alot of ancestors from Gloustershire who changed their last names!

I am mostly interesting in finding out if there were any oprhanages or workhouses in Hewelsfield that Philip might have gone too.

Hi Osprey,

No that wasn't my post on the Forest of Dean website - it was the other person researching Philip Powell.

We think that Philip Powell was actually Philip Blunt born 1822, Hewelsfield (which is not far from Woolaston) to unamarried mother Ann Blunt. Philip's brother Christopher Blunt spent about 20 years living in Woolaston too.

Following on from Harriett having the additional surname Blunt in one census we tried looking for a Philip Blunt and found one which has alot of similarities to Philip Powell. It would explain why we can't find  a baptism record and why there is no trace of the same Philip Powell in 1851 or 41 census.

In 1851 he is  a railway labourer and married to a Mary Ann Blunt - but I can't find a marriage reg for that marriage. There is a Mary and Philip Blunt to match the dates and places that Mary and Philip Powell would have been born but not an Elizabeth so we think that Philip might have changed his name sometime in the late 1850's.

We ordered Charles Mason Powell's death certificate and Philip Powell had died before Charles in 1867 so that narrows the date of his death down.

At the moment we are trying to find a reason for Philip to have changed his name. It was obviously a well kept secret though because if it wasn't for Harriett Powell having Blunt added onto her name in one census then I don't think that we would have ever made the connection!

Thanks to everyone for helping to find Harriett Powell because if we didn't find her in 1871 census then we wouldn't have found a connection between Philip Powell and Philip Blunt.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / DENT'S from Westminster
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 10:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am currently researching the Dent family living in Westminster between 1813 and 1841, and I am having a bit of trouble going back any further than Sarah Dent born 20th May 1813, Westminster, Middlesex. Her baptism record is on Pallot's and IGI and her parents are John Robert Dent and Elizabeth.

I am having a bit of trouble with finding a marriage and birth record for John Robert Dent.

There is a marriage record for a John Dent to Elizabeth Smith, 1812 at St Vedast & Foster Lane, London. But, I am not sure that this is the correct marriage as there is also another marriage between a John Dent and Elizabeth Smith about 1807 in Westminster.

The family are living in St Anne, Soho, Westminster in the 1841 census. Both John (age 55) and Elizabeth Dent (age 55) are not born in the same county. They are living with their children, Charlotte  -25, and James  - 19.

I found a record on IGI for a birth record for John Robert Dent born 04 March, 1787, Richmond, Surrey to parents John Dent and Martha. So, I think that this is might be the right baptism/birth record for him.

If anyone knows anything about the Dent family living in Westminster between 1813 - 1841 please let me know. If anyone might know or help me find the right marriage for John Robert Dent ... I would really appreciate that  :)

Rebecca :D

Hi Dawn,

Thankyou very much for that. I really appreciate it  ;D

It was helpful, thanks. I was trying to find some more information on James Rumbol (like maybe his relatives were the witnesses) because I cannot find a birth record for him. I'll just have to keep on searching.

But, the record gives me some more information on Sarah Dent which is good anyway  :)

Thanks, Rebecca
