Denbighshire / Re: The lodge Brymbo
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Having just read all the chat about The Lodge, I remember visiting an aunt & uncle there when I was young & we used to park the car on the road, at the bottom of the drive & then walk up a steep drive to the houses.   Their names were Annie & Sam Edwards, I beleive.   My grandmother Rosina was Annie's sister, however Rosina died before I was born so I never saw her. Their maiden name was Davies & Rosina m Richard Louis Griffiths from Gwersyllt.    Anyone remember the houses, are they still there?  Anyone remember the family?  They had 3 children I beleive Percy, Gwen & Phyllis.   Anyone with a photo of the row of houses?   Just wondering! Montgomeryshire / Re: searching for ALICE MARIAN ROBERTS
« on: Friday 18 April 08 02:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi Silvery, I've been away & only just found your replies.  I thought they let you know when someone had replied, but obviously not!?     Yes I've got all censuses but she never appears living at home with her parents.  I have her birth cert & yes her parents were Charles Edward Roberts & Elizabeth Beattie m in W Derby 1874. By the 1891 census she's working on a farm as assistant housekeeper & I have since found & obtained the birth cert for her illegitimate daughter, it turns out, not son.  Her daughter was named Sarah Maria Roberts, no father named on the cert of course!  She was b at Deytheur Farm Guilsfield in 1901 & on that census Alice is living with her aunt & uncle & working as their dairy maid but that's at Coed Mawr. Now I don't know if Coed Mawr is the same farm as Deytheur Farm where the birth cert said Sarah Maria was born or not.  Rumour now has it that her daughter was "not all there" either, what ever this means??  And she then had an illegitimate son.    There's only one elderly man alive in the family who remembers her & she was about 50 when he was born so he only knows hearsay & this is where I've got this info from.  He doesn't know what was supposed to be wrong with her other than as he puts it she "wasn't all there".  He remembers if the family all went out they had to find a "sitter" to stay in with her, so she presumably, by the time he could remember her ,was never seen in public!!!   That's all I can offer.  Any more ideas?  Thanks for all your earlier replies that I've only just found.   Amberly

Well sorry to disappoint you but you'll have to wait until April before you'll know, because I haven't got time now to send for it & get it back before I go on holiday.   I'm gone for the whole month of March.   I may send for it before I go but I doubt I'll get it back.   So don't hold your breathe but I won't forget to let you know.
Thanks again,
Amberly

Hi Sue, Now you've got me going again. I've just spent the past hr searching & searching, & like you I can't find any of them in 1901.

In 1881 I found James m to Ann & then found her poss death on Freebmd aged 36 in 1881 Nantwich, which would be the correct area.  About 3 doors down the rd was also a John W 67 & his son William 27 & his grandd Amelia 13, thought John could be James father?? as both James & William put their pob down as Rope, Cheshire.   Both John & William are working on the railrd & by the 1891 census James is too.    My gt uncle Wm Hy Roberts who m a Jane W in 1898 also worked on the rlrd & after he & this Jane m they lived in Coppenhall Monks also v close to Shavington.  So this Jane could have been the one he m.

What made you think her maiden name was Booth?? I couldn't find any Jane B's b in the Little Drayton area around the year she thinks she was b.  It's 1871 on the 1891 census & 1874 on the 1901.  Anymore ideas??  I'll have to break down & send for their marr cert.     Amberl

Hi BN. Glad to hear from you, thought you'd gone on holiday!!!     I've had a lot of help from silvery & we'd sort of come to the conclusion I'd have to send for the marr. cert??!!!   Your reply had gone into my spam box & I've only just found it.  Anyway it shouldn't go in again, I hope.  Anyway see what you can come up with, & thanks for trying.    Amberly.

Hi Silvery,   I found Jane's b'place on the 1901 census. Other than her marriage in Wrexham found on Freebmd I can't find anything else about her.  I've been searching again today.   A

No the bus would stop right outside the farm gate but I was only 4 so I'm sure my memory is not all that accurate.   I think my gran used to tell the bus driver where she wanted him to stop & he would.   They were very obliging in those days!   So we may get nowhere, never mind we tried. Thanks again, I'll look in on you again tomorrow, but I won't be up until your lunch time. A.

Wow, you've been busy whilst I was eating my dinner!   Who is William??  The names of the farms you gave me don't ring a bell with me.  And neither does the name Reg Brown, but I only knew them as Auntie Aggie & Uncle Reg.   I've looked on freebmd too for marriages, but they're often not up to date I find.  So until I found you I didn't have much idea what to do next.  Thanks again, TTYS, I'm on-line with 3 different people at the mo, but I'll be back & look in.  A.
