The web page below says a bit about RCEs. If you don't want to wait for them to become available online and can't visit Edinburgh then you can order a paper copy of the extract for £10. This official copy will reflect the changes recorded in the RCE.

The following link is for the cemetery page of Braintree Council's website. I presume this is the same cemetery cep found in the directory:

Lanarkshire / Re: Searching by address
« on: Tuesday 11 October 05 20:10 BST (UK)  »
It appears that someone going by the name Druid Princess has already compiled a street index for the 1881 Lanarkshire census. The following web page is an archive of a message board on which a helpful American lady posted lists of the addresses covered by each census district. Nearly every relevant message title starts 'Street Index' followed by the parish name. I presume this would help someone to find a property on the census microfilm by using the appropriate district numbers.

ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk does allow you to search the 1881 Census by only inputing an address or partial address. If you can find the house then obviously you could then search for the same family on the 1871 or '91 records. If they owned the house then you might even find it in a will.

Depending on the type of property, there might be some info in trade directories or tax records and there's also the electoral roll. If the house is in Glasgow then you could visit the archives at the Mitchell Library:

The only other suggestion I can make is to try searching for the address on Google.co.uk.
