Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / 1861 Census - William MARTIN
« on: Friday 03 March 06 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for William George MARTIN abt 45 in 1861.  He should be shown as married but not living with family.

His wife, Sophia, was living with his son, (also William George), his daughter-in-law Emma, his grandson (also William George) and his daughter Clara at Lewis Street, St Anns.

William was a male servant in 1841 (Nottingham) and a machine fitter in 1871 (Nottingham).  As far as I know he was born in Lyon, France but 1871 shows Liverpool (probably error by enumerator).

Steve,

Thanks for that.  It's interesting (or frustrating?) that William (husband) is not listed with family.  He is not with Sophia (and family) in 1851, 1861 or 1881 either but shows up in 1871.  If the MS (male servant) at Woodthorpe in 1841 is he, maybe his 'career' was generally living in/serving other families.  As far as I know, he was born in France, hence 'not in County' fits.

I knew there was a Clara but wasn't sure whether she was born before or after 1841 Census but there she is, 12 weeks old.

Can you get Piece/Folio numbers of West St and Woodthorpe for me to check against fiche at the archives?

On the Baptism records, what does N-M, N=B and N=O mean?  Also, can I assume the dates for Born and Bapt transposed?

Thanks,

Sherwood

Thanks Heather, you've found a lot of info for me.  A few queries:

1871 - Robert, widower, lodging with the Smiths (RG10/3502/6/11), presume you meant Robert MARTIN, not Robert SMITH.

1871 - William and John, pupils in Staffs, the reference seems invalid (RG10/2822/13/54).

1861 - Robert Martin lodging in Lancs (RG9/2846/26/5) was born Northumberland so unlikely to be the one I'm seeking (mine was born Nottm, 3 Aug 1839).

Cheers,
Sherwood.

Heather,

William/Sophia/Clara looks good.  I inherited some research notes and there is a reference to daughter Clare (no info other than name) and notes also suggest William was some sort of lace draughtsman.  I don't know whether that is related to machine fitter (maybe a draughtsman got quite involved in the mechanisms of those early lace machines).  Your thoughts on a French Connection also make sense.

Regarding Robert Ignatious and Mary Mann, I had previously found the marriage and am now looking to find an 1871 Census record for them (later I'll be looking for Robert Ignatious in 1861, 1851 and 1841, one step at a time!)

BTW, Mary Mann was his first wife; I separately posted a request regarding Robert Ignatious and his second wife, Elizabeth Baines.

Thanks.
