Somerset / BRAINE family of Queen Camel.
« on: Monday 23 August 10 15:11 BST (UK)  »
:would anyone be willing to do a look up for me for Benjamin Braine - b. 1792 in Queen Camel ?
I have a marriage record for him for 1812 when he married Jane Horsey and census records for 1841- 1871 but have been unable to find a birth record for either him or his son Hugh (b. 1816) would love to find parents and trace the family further back. According to family lore an ancestor fought alongside the Duke of Monmouth in the 1685 rebellion and I would love to know more about this. Does anyone know whether the museum in Taunton has lists ?

Thanks for the reply.
Some good ideas there which I will follow up .
The Hannah Braine reg 1891 is not the same one as Fanny Paul and I haven't been able to find a birth for Fanny at all.
She is on the 1911 Census with her Father but Elizabeth had died by that date.
Benjamin is deceased by the time of Matilda's Marriage in 1892 but I will order certificate for Lucy.

My Grandfather was Billy Thomas - originally from Merthyr then  Bargoed and Deri who was boxing in late 1920's and 1930's.
He went to Australia in 1928 on a boxing tour and contested the Australian Middleweight title.
He was also ,I believe, the only person to beat Tommy Farr.
Any information would be great and good luck with the book.

Thanks - its quite possible that this is the same Mabel.
Interestingly on the marriage certificate for Mabel and James LLoyd Thomas in 1901 it states that Mabel is 18 and that her Father Edwin is deceased.

Many, many apologies - my daughter put the message on the other thread and hadn't mentioned it to me.
I really do appreciate all the help I've been given by others and will certainly explore the possibility that Mabel was registered as Howells and not Davies .

I've tried that as well - only problem being that her maiden name was Davies and as you can imagine there are rather a lot of them in 1883 in Wales !!!
Family tradition says that she came from Welshhay which I think is most probably Hay on Wye as both parents were from Llanigon and their marriage in 1883 took place in the parish church.

Yes I've got the marriage certificate which states that she was 18 in 1901 when she married James at the Register Office in Merthyr Tydfil.
Her Father Edwin is listed as being dead by that time but her Mother Emily was a witness to the marriage.
As a matter of interest I wondered whether 18 was under the age when you could be married - surely it was still 21 in 1901 - without parental consent ?

How could I have forgotten that Women didn't get the vote until  1918 !!!
I'm totally stumped by lack of evidence on Mabel and couldn't think where to turn next - no record of birthplace on any Census from 1891, 1901 or 1911.

Wonder whether anyone could do a lookup on Electoral Register for 1910- 1920 for me ?
I'm looking for James Lloyd Thomas and his wife Mabel believed to be living at 7 Grosfaen Terrace Bargoed during this time period - am especially interested in date and place of birth for Mabel.
1911 census merely states that she was born in Cardiganshire but no place name is given .
Hope someone can shed some light on this !!
Heather.
