Like Jim I'm not too sure of the coat but googling around I have seen Boer War photos with those hats being worn.
Morning Seoras - you're right ... although in the photographs I've seen, the hats seem to have some sort of badge or insignia on them (to identify the regiment?). As Jim says, this one is completely plain. Many thanks for looking.

Just come back to the computer and found so many replies - thank you - please forgive this group response. China and Seoras - sadly I don't have the original of the photograph only this scan as sent. Thank you for the extra information about Edward Brewis, Seoras. The photograph link you posted shows clearly the same frame that surrounds mine. I hadn't been able to make out the address before! Jim, very interesting that you should confirm that the uniform is not military. Unfortunately, if the photo is as early as mid 1890s, it can't be the great grand uncle that I'd hoped it was - so I have  no hope of investigating occupation through census records. Ah well, swings and roundabouts! The uniform still intrigues me though so if anyone has any further suggestions....
Thanks again to you all for sharing your expertise x

I'd hazard a guess at 1901 ish
Thank you! Would that make it a Boer War uniform? (or perhaps it's not military?) I was hoping for turn of the century so your suggestion fits perfectly!:D

Hi, I'm trying to date this photograph. It was taken by Edward Brewis in Newcastle which I think gives a window of 1890 to 1914+. I hoped that the uniform might help but I'm not getting anywhere. Can anyone help please?

The cottages had gone by the 1919-1920 map http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html. This is where they used to be, now built over by Ousterley Terrace and Holmside Terrace http://goo.gl/maps/zMmHn

Stan

Ah I see - so the Wagtail Terrace of today would have been in front (ie to the colliery side) of the block of old cottages. Thanks for the links Stan and a merry Christmas to you!

Not sure if this is any help but Wagtail becomes numbered on the  1881.

Number 1 starts at RG11/4949/68/12   and No 21 is on RG11/4949/71/18

To search by name rather than address,  search for a Richard Dawson, aged 32, born Holmside, Durham
Gadget

This is definitely going to help, Gadget. Thank you so much for your hard work and patience. Hope the parcel arrives soon :)

I might go have a look around there in the next few weeks (it's not very far away) - don't think the cottages are there now but I might pick up some info.
 :)
That would be amazing Gadget - I'm all the way down in Somerset so Google maps is the closest I'm able to get atm! It does look as if the original cottages are gone although there is a street called Wagtail Terrace in the place I would have expected to find them (ish). Thank you again for your help and interest - merry Christmas  ;)

Hi Latina,
If you can follow the route of the census-taker as described at the beginning of the volume you

There is no route described in 1851 or 1871. I have not been able to find the cottages in 1861
In 1851 Wagtail Cottages start at HO107 Piece 2389 Folio 508 Page 35 there are no numbers.
Wagtail is numbered in 1881 starting with No. 1  at RG11 P4949 F68 P12 and finishing at No. 21 at RG11 P4949 F71 P18

Stan

Thank you for confirming this Stan. I couldn't find 1861 either. I have an 1895 OS map which shows the four rows of cottages - I've always assumed that the row nearest the colliery would have been the first built (as they're miners' cottages) and that the row would have been numbered (eventually) starting from the end nearest the road. I've now got lots of information to help me piece together whether this is actually true! Much appreciated!

Hi Latina,
If you can follow the route of the census-taker as described at the beginning of the volume you then may have the chance of doing the same thing in subsequent censuses, and, if you're lucky, find that some of the families have stayed where they were last time, only by now having acquired house-numbers.
       You never know . . .
Thank you pinot - I will try. I obviously have a lot to learn and I really appreciate input from anyone kind enough to give advice and share expertise and experience.
