Just checked the Jewish burials database and there are no Gaze (or similar / phoenetic spellings) families buried in Wales or England

I can check in the morning if they are on the Jewish burial list. However there is a newspaper report for a Charles gaze confectioner getting married in a methodist Chapel https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3634041/3634049/102/

Merthyr Express 26 July 1930 names George Robert Few in the list of fee paying pupils who were going to the intermediate school, from Abermorlais school, so must have lived within walking distance of the school.

There is a photo of Abermorlais boys class 1929 on the Merthyr Georgetown page see Abermorlais school photos via the the link posted by Graham Simons). Maybe he is in the photo.

Esther was with Marcus Weinberg and wife Rebecca in 1921 at the addresses listed in his probate entry on 8th March 1924. Marcus died 22 Dec 1923 and probate was granted to Lazaraus Litiger cigar manufacturer and Myer Langleben. It might be worth seeing if there is a will, to see who is named in it.

Marcus Weinberg aged 36, a tobacconist of 14 Wardour st Leicester Sq also applied for a naturalization certificate in May 1896. He stated he was born in Grodno West Russia in 1860. He stated that he was married (does not name his wife who was the same age), with no children and that he was the son of Morris and Esther Weinberg.

Haven't come across a naturalization certificate for Aaron Jacob Litiger or for Henry / Harry Weinberg and variants. Maybe Marcus took over responsibility for the family after Jacob Litiger's death in 1911.

There could also be an interchangability of family names and also maybe Hebrew names

as opposed to John Jones Davies son of John and Jane Davies of Bryncethin, father a reeholder, who was baptised on 21 Nov 1845 at Llangeitho.

John Jones Davies, a draper, son of John Jones Davies a farmer, was married by licence at St Michael's Aberystwyth on 9 Jan 1877 to Elizabeth Mawson a widow (original name Marpole, father Richard Marpole a farmer). Both aged 31, he lived at Pier st and bride lived at Victoria Tce. Witnesses William Evans and William Jenkins.

There's an index entry in the 1921 C for a John Davies at Talysarn, born Blaenpenal 1845 and this one has a baptism in Blaenpenal. Quarry labourer doesn't seem to be the most appropriate occupation or someone whose brother became a J.P.

There's another suitable John J (could be Jones) Davies in Cefnllys, Llandrindod Wells, draper in 1891 who seems to have married a widow and later moved from Pier st Aberystwyth after dissolving partnership in drapery.

The trees I looked at had a Philip Gunter (1400 - 1470 in Abergavenny) marrying an Elizabeth Gethin. I dicsounted the German hint that you found, but assumed that someone had got their wires crossed.

There is a pedigree that names individuals similar to those in the one tree I looked at (if not the same individuals). although dates out a bit - which could be understandable. I don't know if Bronwen is looking for a German Gunter family, but I assume she is looking for an Abergavenny one, since that is what most others are listing (albeit with un-sourced facts cobbled together from the trees of others. as you said).

One article that lists a pedigree:https://journals.library.wales/view/1337678/1339467/29#?xywh=-455%2C333%2C2917%2C1872
