Family History Beginners Board / Re: Birth Register R1
« on: Tuesday 30 April 24 10:00 BST (UK)  »
R1 is just the register number and of no real significance.

@F1fan has let me see the details and it is a complex one, and without seeing certificates it is impossible to determine what is actually recorded on the entry.

"Blackburn with Darwen" and "Lancashire" are two different registration districts and the birth is registered in each. That shouldn't ever happen. However, the registration district of "Lancashire" only came into existence on 1/6/2005, which is around the time of this particular birth.

I suspect that the birth was registered twice. First in one district and then either because of some confusion about the new district boundaries, or that the birthplace had been given wrongly, deliberately or otherwise, it had to be re-registered in the correct district.

I suspect it might be a re-registration, but impossible to say without seeing the details and even then there may be a number of possible explanations.

Using indexes alobe to confirm relationships always involves some level of assumption and guesswork which can be wrong.

If you want me to give a better opinion  send me the names by PM and I'll have a look.

I think the hundred years thing is only partly correct, as there are already birth GRO records available to 1934.

There is no 100 year rule relating in any way to civil registration records (in England/Wales). The only 100 year restriction, related to family history, is that governing the release of census records, from 1921 onwards.

ALL birth/marriage/death records are public and anyone has a statutory right to purchase a certificated copy of any entry whether that is from a few months ago, or a hundred and fifty years ago. GRO choose to make ordering what they define as "recent" entries more difficult by restricting access through the on-line system, but that isn't backed by any legislation, just by their own policy.

GRO indexes are publicly available ( up to the most recent quarter) but again GRO have decided to restrict the coverage of their own on-line indexes, even though they have previously made the same data available through other means ( e.g. Ancestry and FindMyPast).

Not much to go on if there's no mother's name or address on the birth cert.

The document @Brendaedna has is a short certificate, issued sometime later - I've sent some advice on obtaining the full version ( which will have the mother's details) and then how to research further.

It’s my mums Birth Certificate says Marjorie Dennis Parker.  Her registered name is Marjorie Dorothy Parker….he adopted mums name (then hers) was Dennis.

I keep trying to copy the Birth Certificate here, but it won’t let me.

What do mean by her registered name, if it is not what you have on the birth certificate - are you looking at two documents ?

I can see a Marjorie D ParkIN born in Bradford in 1921, bit not a ParkER.

I will send you a DM with my email - if you wish you can send me what you have and I'll try and explain it for you.

Thanks for your answers. I assume that the later one will have the original date of birth?

Yes.

And re-registrations are never connected to adoption.

First thing to do is to check other entries on the same page and see if they appear in the GRO index.

If they do, then look for a spelling variation/mistranscription

If not, it tells you that the page probably got missed  somehow in the digitisation / transcription process, and you won't find it.

First question is about Aliases : is there any convention about which name is given first

Recent convention is that whatever name the person first gets dealt with under becomes their "file name" and doesn't change.....any other name they later come to notice under is an alias.

I know my mother’s birth surname and her adopted surname and date she was born in 1921. Her birth certificate states her original surname and adopted surname … her first name and middle name remains as registered. From birth records her mother’s maiden name is the same as my mums.

What documents exactly are you looking at ?

Birth certificates should never have an adopted surname on them....to see one that does would be interesting.

But from what you describe I wonder whether you might be looking at index entries and could be  misinterpreting what you are seeing.
