World War One / Re: Regt Identification Please
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

Found a photo of a definate RE in the exact same pose. Note the cap badge and shoulder title. Also the bridle, cavalry had regimental designs. Regimental insignia and buckles featured on theirs. Cavalry men would also, even if not carrying their sabre, would have the frog on the left rear of the saddle.

Good evening,

There are several sources of information on this subject. This is probably the best for you as it gives all the references for TNA records.

Good evening,

Until 1859 there were no formal pensions for ratings. but other forms of payment existed for those wounded or killed in action or on duty. The Chatham chest was one later taken over by the Greenwich Hospital who ran a similar scheme. These were funded by a deduction of sixpence per month from ratings to officers. There was also a payment for ratings wounded or killed in action equal to a years pay made by the Naval pay board.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Which letter is this?

Good evening,

I will go with gadget, I or J but leaning more towards the I. Cursive scripts can be difficult because there are so many styles. I tried to steer clear of them when I did a bit of caligraphy.

Good afternoon/evening,

Welcome back Scrimmers, thought I hadn't seen much input from you. Not that i've done so much myself as it happens.

Hope your book has lots of pictures  ;D ;D ;D, Many books picture some and just give descriptions of others, especially variations of badges.

Sussex / Re: Police Station - North Row, Hastings
« on: Sunday 16 April 23 21:27 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

I have just received this from my cousin. He "inherited" some old photos from an elderly aunt who lived up the rd somewhere until the 50s. Our Granny's family came from Sidley and Hastings originally.

This is North Row from no 17 upwards, he thinks, so no 11 is 3 houses down to the right. The rd now starts with no 7 and the police stn was just down a bit further.

Back again,

Another example here of one being pictured upside down. Navy trade patches are worn flat edge down.

Good evening,

The army do not have telegraphists, they have signallers whose badge is crossed signal flags. Telegraphists are a navy trade and Australia used British trade badges. Unfortunately Kay99s badge is pictured upside down, the wing tips should point up whether RN or RAN.
