Many thanks

Hi Nell,

Thank you for your message.  All I know about James is what I have on John's marriage certficate - he was a licensed victualler.  John was born in Portsea - my mistake.  At the time of his marriage in 1857 he(John) was about 37 - he died in 1880 aged 60.  He was living in Gosport and married in Alverstoke.  Someone kindly found John and his family on the 1861 census for Beer House, South Street, Alverstoke.

Jno Matthews, head, patron?, 38, beer house keeper, born Portsea.
Georgina, wife, 20, born London, Middlesex.
Mary Ann, daughter, 3, at home, born Gosport.
Georgina, 1, at home, born Gosport.
Elvith? or could be a shortened Elizabeth, daughter, 1 month, born Gosport.
Emma Hopkins, daughter, 14, born Portsea.
RG9 648 folio 31.

I have not managed to get any other info on James other than his occupation and as for other children and who he was married to I have no idea.  Looking at John - it seems he was married before - possibly.  All the family have been in the same trade and also John for a few years was in the Navy.  I would just like to be able to get back and hope that someone would be able to find either James or John on the 1851 census.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks once again.

kind regards

Helen

I have recently started to try and trace my mums family.  Matthews.  Stuck with James Matthews, born Portsea - do not know when - he was on his son's Marriage cert in Alverstoke (John) in 1857 down as a licensed vicutullar.

Also want to trace decendabts of the following

John Otway James Matthews - b Southsea 3/06/1889
George James? Matthews - Portsea
Lily Louisa Georgina 1893 - Portsea
May Matthews
Charles Edward Matthews 1897 (my grandfather)

Parents were John Charles Matthews and Georgiana Pellat.  Between 1901 census living in Southsea.

Any help/info would be greatly appreciated

Helen Knox
