Durham / Isabella BARK
« on: Friday 13 March 20 03:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Isabella BARK and her father Alex (Alexander?) BARK.

Isabella was bapt 30 Aug 1778 at Gateshead, Durham, father listed as Alex, no mother mentioned.

Isabella had a daughter Margaret THOMPSON bapt 1 Jan 1802 at St Andrew Par Reg and Nonconf ,Newcastle Upon Tyne,Northumberland,England  - father of her child is listed as James THOMPSOn.

So far I haven't found a marriage for Isabella to James or any other children born to her.

Nor have I found any further children born to Alex. BARK or any birth etc for him.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

On the 1781 Muster Roll his name is recorded as JEAN CHRISTOPHER WILDERMUTH.

He appears on the 1783 Muster Roll (when the regiment was back in England) as CHRISTIAN WILDERMOUTH

When he transferred to the 62 Regiment in 1795 he changed his name again.  This time to JOHN WILDERMOUTH.

It is believed he was born in Alsace, France (though no record has been found other than what is on the IGI which we all know is unreliable).

It is possible that he was either born in France or Germany or Switzerland (where the name Wildermuth is known) or he may have also been born in America or even in England - perhaps his parents were refugees?  i.e. Huguenots?

We know that he married in Belfast, Ireland when the regiment was stationed there.

He has been a hard man to track down but we have found in some official records.  The Muster Rolls, his marriage and his death have all been traced.

Just need to find his birth :)

thanks

Thanks

Sadly he doesn't come up on Ancestry or FindMyPast - except for his death in 1806 in Brabourne Lees, Kent.

I kind of had the feeling that there might not be much personal information in the military records due to the time period etc.  So disappointing.

Trying to find out where he was born is proving very elusive so far.  Though with is name we know that he certainly wasn't English

Armed Forces / 16th Foot Regiment - where do I go for records?
« on: Monday 08 July 19 09:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My ancestor is mentioned in the Muster Roll for the 16th Foot Regiment in 1781.  Later on he transferred out of this regiment to the 62rd.

I would like to find out where these regiments keep their records and if it possible to research them as I would like to find out more about this ancestor particularly where he was born and when or how old he was when enlisted.

This ancestor has been a brick wall for us all for some time so finding out where he was from would be a huge help.

Any suggestions/help etc. would be greatly appreciated.

The COBBAN connection is through my partner.

His great grandmother was Jane COBBAN daughter of George COBBAN and Anne MARTIN.

Jane married a James PIRIE (I know - the Scottish equivalent of Smith making it super hard to trace because there are so many)

James was a policeman and later on an Inland Revenue Officer.  He died young at 35 living Jane to raise 3 kids alone.  She ended up working as a washerwoman to bring money in.  Quite sad really.

Thanks for that.

Interesting about the LDS records for Gartly - I hadn't realised that there was a gap or drop in baptisms so it is possible that George was born in Gartly or Drumblade or nearby but the baptism was never recorded for what ever reason.

In regards to naming patterns I have found that they are a guideline only and that many
Scottish families (or at least in my family tree)  didn't follow them so strongly i.e. first born son being named after the father's father.  Family names do still crop up but just not in that strict order and a father's father name can appear as the 2nd or 3rd or 4th etc son.

This is why George snr (born in Forgue 1787) seemed like a strong candidate.  At this stage I feel we can still put a pencil query next to his name as being the possible correct George until or if we every find another George that fits better.

Possibly if records are missing or were never recorded then we may never find him which means that
the family search for further Cobbans would stop there.  Maybe as more people get DNA tests done then we might find the missing links. :)

Hi,

As we most things there is no 100% proof but this is what I have and found.

George COBBAN
bapt 16 April 1808 Gartly states that his parents are George COBBAN and Christian SMITH (this record is on Scotland's People)

Searching further I then found a marriage for a George and Christian - 26 May 1805 Drumblade (also on Scotland's People and Ancestry)

Drumblade is about 7 miles away from Gartly.

I also found that George and Christian had another son - Alexander also bapt in Gartly in 1806.

Searching through records for the area around both Drumblade and Gartly I then found the most likely candidate for George COBBAN snr

His bapt was in Forgue which is only a few miles from Drumblade  19 Aug 1787 - only a father is listed (George) and no mother

There was a George born in 1796 in Forgue but this one would be too young to be the father of Alexander and George jnr.

There are no other George's in the area for about the right age so the one born in 1787 in Forgue seemed to me to be the most likely candidate. (all the others I found who could have been the right age or older were bapt very far away which could be possible but as you know generally back in those times families stayed in or around the same small area occasionally moving between nearby villages)

The names also seem to fit into the family as well

George the 1st (wife unknown) seems to have had the following children:
William, John, George the 2rd, James, Janet and Isobel

George the 2nd (wife Christian Smith whose father was Alexander Smith) had just the 2 children that I have found so far
Alexander (named after her father) and George the 3rd (named after himself and his father)

George the 3rd( wife Anne Martin) had the following children
Mary, Alexander, ( grandfather's name), George the 4th (fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers names), James, Jane, Jessie, William, John, Anne and Anthony.

As with most things there could be doubt but so far I'm reasonably confident. We can only confirm for sure (or as sure as we can be) once and when or if we find out more information.

Thanks Debra :)

Damn looks like that William Kirker/Mary Brown lead is a bust then.

Yeah I thought his possible birth was too early for the civil records - local churches etc will be the place to check.  I'll see if I can find a list of them or if there is a place where those early births etc are stored.

Thanks John

Yes he does seem a bit of a character

Starting to think he lied about just about everything.  And yes it had occured to me that maybe he had lied even about his name.  Criminal on the run?  Leaving behind another wife and family somewhere?

Ooo I hadn't seen those paperspast articles before.  Going to read them now.  Seems like he got in trouble a few times going by some other news article I found awhile ago.

Thanks everyone again for all the help.  Our ancestors certainly don't make it easy to track them down

No Kirker's or Watt's as witnesses on the William's marriage which doesn't surprise me.

Back to square one.  Pondering as to whether to contact all the historical societies in Victoria again and asking them to check again for William Kirker or any other Kirker's for the time period 1835-1870 but not sure if they will be willing to check again.

Has anyone else ever gone to a source to double check something?

For now the brick wall remains...
