Hi Steve,

You should have a personal message now with the Hay info.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare

This is my first time using rootschat so please forgive me for simply replying to this post (I couldn't work out any other way). I am researching David Hay (abt 1879) married to Janet Frame and believe the James Hay that you were seaking info on may be his grandfarther. Also, when searching for information on David Hay I noticed an old post from you offering spare birth certificates, do you still have this?

Any information you could provide on David Hay and his ancestors would be most appreciated.

cheers
Steve

Hi Lucan,

While that sounds fabulous - I can't get there on Saturday.

I will continue my search - and extend to the Catholic registers which are now avaiable at Scotland's People.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Maggiemck,

The hotel is currently called the Glasgow Central Hotel - although it has been boarded up for some months.  I believe it is currently being refurbished.  Before that it was part of the 'Quality' Hotel group.

I did a quick search for the Caledonian Railway - which built/owned Central Station when it opened and their website seems not too bad (http://www.crassoc.org.uk/) From what I can tell from here, their archives are held with Glasgow University - details here... http://www.gla.ac.uk/archives/  I have dealt with the Uni archives a couple of times (although not on family research business) and have always found them to be helpful.

I also googled and found this (which may or may not be of interest) - http://scotland.stv.tv/home/76341-glasgow-central-station-part-4/

hi Steven,

Yes - BROUGH and BRUFF seem to be interchangeable (BROUGH can be pronounced as 'bruff' to rhyme with 'tough' I suppose), although the vast majority of the time, I have found them in Scotland as BRUFF.

I've had to wrestle with lots of surname variants in the past and most of the time I have found them in the long run - but this one has me stumped :(

Cheers,
Clare

Hi,

I'm looking for an Elizabeth KENNAGHAN (or variant) who was married to a John BRUFF.  He was born ca. 1776 and died in 1845 in Glasgow.  I have quite a bit of info on their family, just can't find Elizabeth.  I am 99% sure it is because I haven't nailed the spelling of the name.  I am aware that in OPRs and certificates, most of the time the person writing the name would just guess at the spelling from how the name sounded.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Monica,

I had a quick look on there earlier and there is nothing for her maiden or married surname as far as I can see (although I didn't go through a lot of surname variations).  I think I may have to go and look at the Dundee Sheriff Court records at NAS.

I'm quite confused though as to why she is  in Dundee as up until now, I thought that bit of the family were all in Glasgow.  I almost think the newspapers would be a better option - especially as Dundee is part built on journalism :)

Cheers,
Clare
