London and Middlesex / George Green married to Wilkie Plews
« on: Tuesday 14 March 17 04:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find any information on George Green and Wilkie Plews.

I have the following information  -

    a)  Wilkie Plews - b. 29 Apr 1835 in Newbattle, Midlothian, Scotland; d.  Jul 1887 in Newington, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

          Parents -
Father - Matthew Plews - b. Abt. 1791 in Crakehall, Yorkshire, England ; d. 16 Mar 1876 in Newington, Edinburgh, Scotland.
          Mother - Jane (Jean/Janet) Wilkie - b. ???? ; d. ??? (between 1835 - 1838) - I have not found Jane's birth or death.

There were about 10 children in this Plews family, all born in Newbattle. Wilkie was the youngest born in 1835. Her mother Jane died some where between Wilkie's birth in 1835 and 1838, when Matthew married for the second time to Elizabeth Phipps on 16 Dec 1838 in Newbattle.

      b)  In SP I have found -
       Wilkie's birth - 1835 to Parents Matthew Plews and Jane Wilkie ;
The 1851 Census - Wilkie is a Household servant, aged 15, in the Robertson household (in   Hamilton Lanark), born in Newbattle, Edinburgh.
Wilkie's Death - July, 1887 in Newington, Scotland - Name as Wilkie Green, aged 52,
She was a Housekeeper (domestic servant), widow of George Green, butler; Witness, William Cairns, Nephew.

       c) In FamilySearch - found Wilkie in the 1841 Census - aged 6, in Well, Yorkshire North Riding, England living with a family (Palliser) that is not her own - possibly relatives??  I'm guessing that her mother Jane has died by this stage.   https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ5Z-S7X

       d) I have found the birth of a son - George Wilkie Green –

Mr George Wilkie Green (82), of Bank Street, Westmead, died in hospital at Bondi
on Sunday. His wife pre-deceased him. A daughter survives. The funeral left the
parlours of Charles Innes and Son, parramatta, yesterday for the Church of England
              Cemetery, Rookwood.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I have no information about Wilkie after 1861 Census and when she died in 1887, apart from the birth of son George in 1861.

The missing years - when did she move to London and what was she doing, her marriage to George Green, any information on George Green and his death (he must have died before 1887 as she is mentioned as a widow), any other children, etc.

Any information would be most appreciated,

Re - "......There is a will of Thomas Overbury proved 13 September 1756, mentions nephew Robert Overbury of Oxford, Inn keeper, sister Elizabeth Simpson, nephew Simon Badger, sons of Overbury Badger late of Banbury Oxford. Wife Arabella.
notes his wife Arabella Overbury's will was proven 3 March 1769 she was a very rich woman, left everything to children/grandchildren of Elizabeth Simpson.(she was her sister in law)...."

Does this mean that Thomas Overbury and wife Arabella didn't have any children, if Arabella "left everything to children/grandchildren of Elizabeth Simpson" ?

Who was Elizabeth Simpson (nee Overbury) married to?

I know that Julia Taylor (dau. of Elizabeth Tallemache and Thomas Taylor) did marry Julius Joseph Hockley in India - they were my Grandmothers Grandparents. Julia had 6 children, all born in India. She died about 1857 in India and Julius married Emma Annie Mary Darby in 1860 in Wallingford, Berkshire, England and had 7 children - the first four born in India and the last three in England (Oxford and Surrey). Emma died in 1914 and Julius died 1884 both in Devonshire, England.

The Hockley family came from around the Surrey area - Godalming, Puttenham, Guildford.

Any information on Mary Overbury and her family?

Thanks,

Thanks so much Monica for all the leads on Elizabeth - I will follow up on them.

And, yes Elizabeth did have an older brother Thomas Cossar Plews (b. 1855 - d. 1913 at 44 Vernon Street in Glasgow, married to Isabella Harley Govan in 1886 - no children, latert married David Wyper in 1922) who was a butcher.

Also, Ross Drysdale Plews (called Bunty by the family) was my late Dad's uncle, youngest of 6 children born to John Cossar Plews (another of Elizabeth's older brothers and also my G. Grandfather) and Christina Ross. He died in WW1 - in 1916 in the Battle of High Wood aged 19. My Dad didn't know him as he wasn't born until 1924.

Many thanks,
    Sandi

Hi,
I am researching my PLEWS family in Scotland (originally from Yorkshire) and need some help/guidance on a particular member – Elizabeth Plews.

She was the 5th and youngest child of Matthew Archibald Plews (b. 1818 in Ripon, Yorkshire, Eng – d. Dec 1866, Royal infirmary, Glasgow) and Margaret Cossar (b. 1819 in Inveresk with Musselburgh, Midlothian, Sct – d. Jul 1888, Glasgow, Sct) – they married in 1850 in Cranston, Midlothian, Sct.

Elizabeth – b. Oct 1863, in Row, Dunbarton; d. May 1939, in Western infirmary, Glasgow – aged 75. Informant was James Keenan, her brother-in-law.

She married a John Keenan on 25 Feb 1919 at St Charles' Chapel, Glasgow, Sct. The SP marriage record says that John (a butcher) was a bachelor, aged 43. Elizabeth (Pork Butcher Saleswoman) was a spinster, aged 48 (though she really was about 56). All their parents were deceased at the time and I can’t find evidence of any children.

I found the following information in the SP Census ;

1881 – District Milton; Margaret Plews (widow) aged 61 – formerly a laundress, 2 unmarried sons aged 24 and 22, and daughter Elizabeth (unmarried) aged 17, a grocer.

1891 – District Kelvin; Elizabeth (unmarried) aged 27 – shop assistant, sister-in-law. Both her parents had died by this stage and she was living with her married sister Catherine, husband James Nicol and their 4 children in 515 New City Road.

1901 – District Kelvin; Elizabeth (unmarried) aged 36 – butcher (own account), visitor. She is living/staying with a Jane Allan (widow) aged 55 – who lives in 515 New City Road.

1911 – there is no sign of Elizabeth Plews anywhere in this Census. I did check District Kelvin; and found her sister Catherine (widow) aged 59 and 3 unmarried children still living in 515 New City Road AND also Jane Allan (widow) aged 65 with her son William in 515 New City Road.

I'm guessing 515 New City Road was a block of flats/rooms.

Elizabeth seems to have disappeared ‘after’ the 1901 Census until she married in 1919.

Can anyone please help me find out any information on her during these ‘missing’ years?

Thanking you in advance,
Sandi
