Carmarthenshire / 1891 Census, Whitland, Carmarthen or Missing from Ancestry?
« on: Tuesday 29 September 20 10:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi readers and thank you for dipping into this enquiry.

This enquiry concerns searches at Ancestry.

I have tried two separate names: Isaac Newton Rees and Elizabeth (& Lizzie) Rees whom I had hoped/ expected to find at 'The Emporium' Whitland, Carmarthenshire in the 1891 census.  I failed to find either of them within that census.

Isaac Newton Rees is found in earlier and subsequent censuses.

The Emporium has different addresses in different censuses, but all appear to be in the centre of Whitland.

I've tried (for the first time), using the Card Catalogue, and reached Carmarthenshire, but no Parishes were offered.

What am I doing wrong?  Or is Whitland missing from the Ancestry database?

Glamorganshire / Re: Mary Laura THOMAS b1882 Q4 Morriston, Swansea

Hi Rosie,

Very many thanks for your incredibly speedy responses.

Your first response ties in with the information I have elicited over the time since this research commenced back in 2017, Mary Laura's mother was born as Ann Humphrey, the first daughter of the above mentioned John and Elizabeth Humphrey.

Following your second post, I have gone around the loop again, dropping 'Laura' and dropping 'Glamorgan' from my search parameters and I have been presented with a page I have seen on a number of previous occasions: "BIRTHS Registered in July, August, and September 1882" with the page number 516 a little further to the right.

When looking down the centre column I can see two Mary Jane's followed by a Mary Letice, between which I would have expected to see Mary Laura, but no Mary Laura is to be seen on my screen.

The odd thing is that when I open up the index, there is Mary Laura THOMAS, Swansea, Glamorgan, 11a, 630, between a Mary Josephine THOMAS and (the afore mentioned) Mary Letice THOMAS, but I am at a loss to see Mary Lucy on my screen.

Ohh the unexpected mysteries of Family History Research!

I thank you again for you assistance,

Stay Safe, JohnG_Swansea.

I am conducting research on the wider family of John (b1819) & Elizabeth (b1822) HUMPHREY, the builder of several schools and many chapels across south west Wales.

I have run into a brick wall with their Granddaughter Mary Laura THOMAS, who is shown by "FreeBMD" as the birth being "registered" in Swansea, 1882, Q4 (December), Volume 11a, page 630; my standard search protocols on Ancestry have failed to find a matching birth with that name, year, volume and page details.

Is there any means by which an Ancestry search can conducted using Volume and Page details?

Thank you for reading, JohnG_Swansea.

This is some months back, but thank you for this information. I am descended from Mary Sayer Cox, who married in Australia and moved to New Zealand.

Welcome to RootsChat.

Mary Sayer Cox is on a branch other than which my wife's ancestors are on, the divide coming via the brothers Stephen COX(b:1776) & John COX(b1780), our primary route took us into the depths of Southern and Central Africa being Natal & Kinshasa/ Léopoldville, but unfortunately several sub-branches of Stephen's line are looking a bit thin.  Having said that our line to Mary Sayer COX has reached her marriage in Australia but hasn't progressed beyond that.

I have sent you a separate message through the RootsChat 'Personal Message' system.

Pauline,

Thank you for providing a path to the required information.

I've now studied the outcome/results page and I think I can now see where my previous search path's have gone wrong

I shall now retry some of my previous searches to see if the outcomes produce any better results.

Many thanks again, JohnG_Swansea.

Hello Researchers

I have found the details, on both Ancestry & FamilySearch, for the baptism of a Mary Ann White on the 9 February 1814 at an unknown Church in Bristol.  The parents are correctly identified, but at which Church did the baptism take place?

According to the details on Ancestry, details of the baptism are to be found on FHL Film: 1596678.

I have tried on several occasions to access FHL films, but always without success.

It would be exceedingly helpful is someone with the require skills could access the above film and identify the church involved.

Thank you, JohnG_Swansea.

Shaun,

Well lets hope I remember that next time I'm pointed towards an unsorted film strip.

“You are never too old to learn something new, or too young to learn too much.
How true.

Thank you.

Wowww,

However did you do that so quickly?

All we were offered were links to two un-sorted films.

Thank you indeed!

Thank you Shaun,

Well that closes down one of the avenues of enquiry for this particular family.

Insofar as the two children born in St Michaels, Barbados are concerned, if we want to trace copies of the original documents we have been pointed towards two unsorted bundles, probably better described as film strips, both of which appear to have over 700 images therein. If we ever settle down to inspect each image we might even come across an image for the death of Annie Catherine, if in fact she actually died there.  There are two other options:
Annie might have died whilst the returning family were at sea, or

She might have died back in England, if so most likely Somerset, but FreeBMD doesn't have any information concerning that option.
Thank again for your observations.

JohnG.
