The Common Room / Re: Can my Ancestry account be hacked?
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 13:03 GMT (UK)  »
I would maybe change your password, just to be on the safe side.

However what you are describing sounds like it could be a scam to me.

It might be that this is someone using ancestry to try a romance/flirting scam.

If that is the case, it won't be anything to do with your settings or your account, the scammers will just have set up an account and will be contacting as many people as possible to see if something sticks.

I get lots of these across multiple platforms and accounts. Even once on a scrabble game! It's crazy, but it's big business so people will try it.

The Common Room / Re: Should I contact this relative? Advice appreciated.

I can see that point of view.

I really love seeing what distant relatives are up to. So I guess it's horses for courses?

I don't think there is any harm in reaching out.

In my experience, most people reject contact.

Maybe you are more charming than me and you'll have a better result.  ;D

Kerry / Re: Train accident
« on: Friday 24 November 23 21:16 GMT (UK)  »
Well spotted mckha489. A few more details.

James O Brien was a porter on the Limerick and Kerry line.

His wife Mary O Brien, witnessed the accident, which was at the Devon Road Station, of Listowel. The accident happened on the 8th July, the article on the 21st of July is about the inquest which happened the Monday before the 21st July.

His wife apparently lived at Tullagoline in Limerick.

It appears Mr O Brien was trying to stop a man getting onto the train while it was already in motion, and unfortunately he fell under the train and died from his injuries.

Earlier articles from the same newspaper say he lived long enough to be moved to the workhouse infirmary on the Wednesday of the accident and died on the Friday evening. Horrible. It also notes he left a wife and young family, although doesn't say how many children or their names.

I've had a very quick look through Irish newspapers and haven't found mention of an O'Brein dying in a train accident.

However, if he died a week later from his injuries, then he might not be mentioned in them at all.

With such a broad scope and so few details however, it's very possible that I've missed something.

Do the records say who registered the birth?

I wonder if it was a misunderstanding in the family. Perhaps the new mother was ill or something and they didn't want to register the birth themselves, so they asked family members to do it and there was a mistake?

Not sure if this is the same one, but this document suggests 'The Holly's' is a listed building on on Park Road.

Nah, this doesn't make sense for your location.

Are we talking about the area of Carrington?

I don't know the area personally, but looking at the map it seems that those roads today have been given the numbers  A6144 for Carrington Lane and the B5166 for Ashton Lane.

You can virtually walk up and down those roads using Google Maps and see if anything looks like it matches your description.

Someone has saved this image on Pinterest, claiming that it's a propaganda postcard from WW1.

Their version of the image has the following written on the bottom.

"Bringing up the reinforcements. Marie Celeste, London Hospital"

They don't offer any sources to back up their claim.

However Barts Health Archives also have this image, with a similar claim, saying it was the Royal London Hospital.
