Technical Help / Re: How much broadband do I use?
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 22:35 GMT (UK)  »
In their Acceptable Use Policy, Shaw says:

You must ensure that your activity while using the Services does not improperly restrict, inhibit or degrade any other customer’s use of the Services, nor represent (in the sole judgment of Shaw) an unusually large burden on the network itself, such as, but not limited to, peer to peer file sharing programs, serving streaming video or audio, mail, http, ftp, irc, dhcp servers, and multi-user interactive forums. The guidelines for Bandwidth Usage/month for each service package are the following: Shaw High-Speed Lite — 15 GigaByte; Shaw High-Speed — 60 GigaByte;

So, am I not using up some of this when I take part in a webinar, watch recorded instructional videos (on youtube or RootsTV), or download a pdf document such as a census, in a chatroom, use email, or (very, very occasionally) use Skype, etc?  What about just surfing the web, researching?  Boy, am I confused.

If it is for downloading only, I have no idea how much downloading would take up 60 GB.

Thanks for your help.

Technical Help / How much broadband do I use?
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
Here in Canada, cable companies have lowered the cap on our broadband usage and raised our rates.  I am now capped at 60 GB per month, down from 75 GB.  I'm already paying over $100 per month to my ISP (mind you, that includes TV), so I don't want to run into their very high-priced surcharges.  The thing is, I have no idea how much broadband I am using now.  These are just abstract numbers to me.  Is there any way I can monitor it?  No details are given by my ISP (which is Shaw Cable, for the benefit of any Western Canadians that are reading this).  Maybe there is an an app or something?  I'm rather mystified by this whole thing.

I'm not a novice with computers, but neither am I a techie.  Please keep it simple.

Thanks very much

Yes, I know.  That's why I'm asking for the manual lookup.  I know the year 2000 is publicly available, but not online.  I have no access to it here in Canada.

By the way, there are several gaps in the online version, too.  It's a very good start, though, and I'll be glad when Ancestry gets the whole thing online.

Please could somebody look for a will or administration for me in the Principal Probate Registry for Reginald Edward PRICE, died December 2000 in Kington, Herefordshire?

If I had the transcript from the PPR I could then send for the will or admon.

Reginald was born 13 November 1916 in Kington.  He married in 1938.  There is a possibility that his wife is still alive so I will not include her name here.

Thank you for any help.

Technical Help / Syncing Google Bookmarks and Firefox Bookmarks
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 19:35 BST (UK)  »
My favourite browser is Firefox 3.6.10.  I also have the Google Toolbar (the most up to date version.)  Normally I work on a desktop computer but I also have a netbook.  A while back I imported my Firefox bookmarks to Google bookmarks successfully.  This was done on the desktop, and when I travelled with my netbook they worked perfectly.

Now I have added a number of bookmarks to Firefox.  I will be on the move again soon with my netbook and want to sync these new bookmarks to Google bookmarks.  Their instructions did not help me, and trying to get personal help from Google is quite impossible.  Rootschatters are so much more helpful.

Please, could somebody give me a simple fix?  Or must I delete all my Google Bookmarks and re-import all my Firefox Bookmarks.  That seems a bit drastic.

Thank you so much

England / Principal Probate Registry Online
« on: Monday 28 June 10 19:33 BST (UK)  »
When Lady Teviot was visiting our town in May, she briefly mentioned that all the digitization was done and the Principal Probate Registry would be online 'soon'.  I've been waiting for this!  Please, could somebody supply me with more details?  Who is putting it online?  When can we expect it to be available? Costs?   Are there any hold-ups? I'd really love to know.

Thanks
