Hi

I hope someone may be able to help. Is anyone able to access copies of the Westmoreland Gazette for late November/December 1947 at a local library or local studies archive? I live in Oxfordshire, and the paper doesn't seem to be available online to view anywhere.

I am looking for information on a German POW who died in November 1947 and was buried at St. Ninian's churchyard. There may be a reference in a newspaper of the period as it appears he died in an accident. It is a bit of a mystery and I've been in contact with the church and their records do not have any more details.

If anyone can help I'd be pleased to hear from you!

Many thanks

I may be able to help you with some information if he was a POW in the UK. This is one of my areas of interest.

Feel free to contact me directly!

World War Two / Re: Found him in a pow camp but nothing else, + fake medals

Hi

Looking at the information on the Royal Leicestershire Regiment website, he transferred to the Black Watch in November 1943. Findmypast shows his regiment to be the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. It is possible he transferred prior to capture.

Regardless, the Leciestershire Regiment participated in the North Africa campaign, and the Black Watch and Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were part of the 51st Highland Division which took part in the campaign in Sicily and Italy.

Therefore it is very likely he was entitled to the two campaign stars.

From the photos, they do look like they may be plastic reproductions (I've seen these for sale in museum shops).

If you lose original medals (except in a house fire, burglary, etc) the MOD will not replace them, so you have no choice but to purchase reproductions. The MOD actually recommends that 'you may wish to consider purchasing replica medals from a specialist medal company or reputable medal dealer.'

Hi

This is an interesting card. I am carrying out some research into German POWs at the moment in the Oxfordshire/Berkshire area.
Can I ask which camp this was sent from?

Matt

Thanks in advance.

From accounts I have heard of Merchant Navy men sunk during the war, I understand that once your ship went down, you were 'discharged at sea' - therefore you were no longer employed by the owners, and were left to your own devices. This meant that the owners did not have a responsibility to return you to the UK - you had to find your own way back. Pretty harsh.

Interesting story here which explains one man's experiences of this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/95/a5954295.shtml.
