Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Ancestry 1911 Infirmity column still blank??
« on: Friday 12 October 12 16:38 BST (UK)  »
It's now October and Ancestry have not yet uncovered the infirmity column. I hope they're not putting it off until November when the free access ends.

When they said this column would be uncovered in September they didn't specify which September.  ::)

If you know the date of death then you could look through the announcements in the Glasgow Herald for a few days after. This may give details of the funeral,
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC

If it's not there then perhaps try the Evening Times,
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2mus-XyGPC0C

Searching www.DeceasedOnline.com for 1965-7 shows a couple of cremations in Edinburgh for this name. The free results include the dates of death. This site only has a small proportion of the country's records, so unless the family had a strong connection with Edinburgh then this is probably not her.

The death cert can be ordered from Scotland's People.

At the bottom of page 2 they tell you what pages the offers are on. So far this week this offer has been at the bottom of page 42, just after the centre.

Earlier I gave a link to a list of 20 passwords which others had worked out. It sounds like these no longer work. The first 11 passwords printed in the Mail are:

Intrigue
Family
Heritage
Home
Heroes
Grandad
Villains
Tree
Noble
Aristocracy
Manor

Enter any 10 of these at http://findmypast.dailymail.co.uk to get 40 credits for FindMyPast. If you ticked the box for Scottish records when you registered you will also receive 30 credits for Scotland's People. I had thought it would be one or the other but they give both.

They will eventually publish 25 passwords. When you enter the 20th one they should give a further 85 credits for FindMyPast.

It is telling me the offer has now expired , and the "radio" offer still has the one code which I have already used !

With the Daily Mail offer, the first code (mail) has expired. For the rest of the offer you collect 10 or 20 codes currently being published in the paper and enter them at http://findmypast.dailymail.co.uk. Today's was the eighth code, though people have already found the rest on the internet.

The Radio Times promotion is a separate free offer, finishing 2nd Oct. Just follow the instructions at www.findmypast.co.uk/content/radio-times/offer.

Flicking through the Money Saving Expert Forum I found that someone has looked on the internet and found all 20 Daily Mail codes. Apparently they work. So if you miss any,

Elsewhere on MSE I found that The Lady mag have a free draw to win a bottle of Grant's Whisky and £30 of FindMyPast credits (closes 4 Oct),

As per posts on the Census & Resource board, the 1911 is still free on Ancestry until the end of next month, though they haven't yet uncovered the last column.

Personally I try to do as others have suggested and save all useful records to my computer.

I've never subscribed to FindMyPast but I have used (free) credits to access records. These have run out but I can still access them all from the 'My saved records' tab on FindMyPast. So you should be alright. No harm downloading the most interesting ones though to save on your computer.

Ancestry however is different. I can't access any of my records saved on there without a new subscription.

it's worth spending time with the search system and making a note of what you eventually want to pay for.

If you are logged in then you can save articles ready for if/when you choose to subscribe. You can also add notes about the article.
