If anyone is interested in the Fusells of Dunkerton and Hemington, I have made an extensive study of this family, to which a 2x great grandmother belonged, and can trace James' ancestry back a further  5 generations, to say nothing of the wider cousinage.

Glamorganshire / Re: Fussells from abergwynfr/Pontypridd

My 2x great grandmother was an Eleanor Fussell.
Your Benjamin, christened 11th May 1873, privately, and again in Dunkerton church publicly with his brothers,17th October 1878, makes an appearance in her family tree as a distant cousin.
I can provide you with details of his Fussell ancestors going back a further 6 generations, mostly in the parishes of Dunkerton and Hemington, which were both owned by the same gentry family.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Arms of Jonathan Power Gilpin, gent of Bath
« on: Wednesday 21 June 17 16:10 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find a description of the arms of a several times great uncle Jonathan Power Gilpin.
Apprenticed; 14th February 1737, to Frances Savage of Tetbury, Glos, attorney.
Later a cornet in the Duke's Dragoons.
Married 26th June 1759, Tellisford, Somerset, Frances Batchellor, groom stated as of Kington St Michael, Wiltshire.
Buried; 24th September 1790, Tellisford.
PCC will; 16th May 1787 mentions "my tea china and yellow and green ware with my arms on them". Possibly Chinese armorial ware, as his son was station in the Indies at that time. in the same paragraph he mentions silver coat buttons with a fox on them in gold. So I wondered whether they might feature on his shield or crest.

There are no Gilpins in the 1623 Heraldic Visitation of Wiltshire. His brother, James Gilpin, was Recorder of Oxford, died before 21st March 1767, when his brother, as executor, placed a notcie in the Oxford Journal.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I had assumed he remained in the area, as he reappears in 1911.

Somerset / Emma Catley of Midsomr Norton
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 16:33 BST (UK)  »
Searching for the baptism of Emma Catley, natural daughter of Elizabeth Catley, no father mentioned.
Married; 1869, Thomas Wilkins.
Buried; 3rd April 1901, midsomer Norton.

From her age in the subsequent censuses she would have been beteen 1828-1833.
Her sister Mary Catley was baptised 11th June 1823, Midsomer Norton, noted as baseborn.
She also had a brother, James Catley, born c1826, but again I have been unable to trace his baptism.

Somerset / Judith Averie, of Hemington?
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Trying to locate the family of Judith Averie.
Married; 16th February 1655/6, Hemington, Steven Cradock.
Buried; 19th February 1705/6, Hemington.

There were Averies/Averys n the neighbouring parishes of Mells and Frome, some of whom belonged to the same lineage, but I can't seem to connect her with either.

Somerset / Re: WELLS, help with location of an abode, please.

The "Know your place" website has recently been extended from it original Bristol focus to cover Somerset. It allows you to locate streets etc on old and modern maps - although the Somerset section is not as detailed as yet.

Thank you for your responses.
My next step will be to do a general study of families with this name in the area, and hope I might get lucky. There is a connection between some of the Averies in Mells and Frome,  although that line originated in Congresbury/Yatton and were armigerous.

Gloucestershire / Re: Iles family, Bristol
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 12:08 BST (UK)  »
Your post caught my attention as my 2x great grandmother, Mary Ann MGill, nee Davies, married an Isaac Iles as her third husband on 8th November 1886, St Philip and James, Bristol. Previously she had married two bothers in succession, which was actually illegal.
Anyway, I digress. To find out about vital event in 19th century Bristol use family search. under their English records you can find practically the complete Bristol Parish Registers, and some Non-Conformist registers, although images are not available. I found it invaluable in drawing up my Bristolean family tree.
