Sorry - forgot to say I had looked at the house - quite nice!  Will also look up that mine disaster as you seemed to indicate it had involved the name Pretoria? One of my family members died in a mine disaster, and as I come from Rotherham originally, and several members of my immediate family worked "downt pit" i feel involved when I hear the word "disaster"

I really appreciate your input Andrew!

Thanks Lancsann. I'm not sure how i got the 1911 census without James on it. I'll have to go back and look again, but the one you've given is definitely them.
Thanks again!! :D

Radcliffe and Nanny Jan,
Thank you so much for all this amazing information. This afternoon, my friend only knew that her g.grandfather was born in a workhouse, with no father mentioned, and mothers name as Ann Holmes nee Hutchinson. My friend was convinced Ann wasnt probably married, but Radcliffe - you found the marriage, and we are so grateful. Its a strange story though, because with all the info you gave, we found Ann and it Robert on the 1901 census, then she gives birth to James in the work house 1904, yet we have Robert and Ann back together in 1911, with no mention of James. My friend says her grandfather told her that James hated his mother, so goodness knows what went on. Was James another mans son, and she had him in the workhouse then abandoned him? You try to think of all the scenarios but we may never know the truth. But your help has been invaluable in tracing the family back, and though I wish we could still get the workhouse records, have tried the National Archives, but with no result.
I'd like you to know Radcliffe, that I try to help people with their family histories, and show them how to research for themselves, but as a very last resort, to ask someone on rootschat. You have been the most wonderful people with your time and energy, and I would like to thank you all on the site (but especially you Radcliffe because you have come to my and my friends aid before) Thank you once more,
Pauline

I have a James Holmes born in Lancaster Union Workhouse 1904. His mother is registered as Ann Holmes formerly Hutchinson, of Warton, Unfortunately there is no fathers name registered, though on James marriage certificate (1929) he is listed as Robert (Labourer)

Does anyone have the workhouse records please, and if so, is there also a brother, Norman Holmes there?

I have found a 1911 census for a James Holmes, birthplace Colne, living as a boarder, but can find no other one that looks likely.

I have been unable to find a marriage between an Ann Hutchinson and Robert Holmes, so wonder if she really did marry him, or just used his name.

I would appreciate any help at all on any of these people please.
