Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: james thurston
« on: Wednesday 02 August 23 14:51 BST (UK)  »
I realise I might be a bit late to this Thurston chat - sorry if the below is no longer useful!

I'm related to this James too, and have been researching him/the Thurstons for awhile. I've found records connecting this James Thurston (baptised 1808, Great Baddow) to parents Rosetta Harman and James Thurston.

The baptism transcript, as well as a marriage transcript for a Rosetta Jarmin (sp) and James Thurston's marriage transcript (1807, Romford), are on FreeReg.

Rosetta's parish is listed on FreeReg as being Romford, while James' is listed as being Upminster. Research so far seems to indicate that Rosetta wasn't born in Essex - looks possible that she was born in St Mary le Bow in 1779.

Lancashire / Re: William Butterworth Sharples - Convict - STUCK!

Hi Debra

I haven't come across that variation before - thanks for pointing that out!

I'll keep the Sally/Sarah & Jonathan parent idea on the table then...  :)

Lancashire / Re: William Butterworth Sharples - Convict - STUCK!

Thanks so much for your reply Carole!

Unfortunately, the only record of his death is from a (very brief) newspaper article - it doesn't give an age or year of birth. The estimate of 1780/1782 is based on the age estimates throughout his convict records (and based on his recorded age of 35 at the Lancaster Assizes).

I may have forgotten to mention it in my post (oops!) but I searched all the combinations I could think of for parents and possible remarriages (e.g. the scenario you suggested, as well as the reverse - e.g. perhaps his mother died when he was young, and he took on her maiden name as a second middle name).

I found one Recognizance record for a Jonathan Butterworth who was allegedly the father of Sally Sharples' unborn child (in Hundersfield) in Nov 1780. But the only semi-related record I've found is the marriage of a Jonathan Butterworth and Sarah (not Sally) Sharples in 1781. Interestingly, there was a William Sharples born in March 1780 to a Sarah Sharples (no father recorded), in Hollingsworth. It seems that these two locations aren't compelling close together...and then there's the name difference...  :(

There are just so many Butterworths and Sharples that I don't know how to narrow them down any further   ???

Lancashire / William Butterworth Sharples - Convict - STUCK!
« on: Monday 31 July 23 13:05 BST (UK)  »
I've finally admitted defeat. I'm putting my brick wall out there in the hope that one of you will be able help solve the mystery!

I'm trying to track down a William Butterworth Sharples. He was tried at the Lancaster Assizes in March 1815 (convicted of forging banknotes) and sentenced to 14 years' transportation. He sailed for New South Wales aboard the ship Ocean I and arrived in January 1816. (More info further down this post).

His post-transportation life is very solidly documented (he ended up in Tasmania). However, there is very scant detail about his pre-conviction life.

I've found no "X Butterworth Sharples" anywhere in the records for Lancashire (or England, in fact). The closest I've found is potential parent marriages, in which one parent was a Sharples and one was a Butterworth. I either excluded most of them, or none were leads strong enough to provide any further clues or links.

Given he was about 35 years old when he committed his crime (and given that he went on to have a bit of a troubled conduct record in Australia) I struggle to believe that this crime was his first. I smell a possible alias...

I really want to find out when and where he was born or baptised, ideally one or both of his parents' name (and of course, any other life information in between!)

Any and all help much appreciated!  :)

Background Details

  • His crime was committed in Blackburn.
  • Convict records online and/or other family trees suggest potential places of birth as being Manchester or Bury.
  • In major convict records, William is usually referred to as William Butterworth Sharples, but sometimes as just William Sharples, or William Sharpless/Sharpley. Some records have referred to him as William Butterworth. One Australian record site notes that "William Butterworth" was his actual name, and the addition of "Sharples" was his alias.
  • William has been noted as a brickmaker and/or bricklayer.
  • There is no indication in any records that William was married or had children prior to transportation.

Buckinghamshire / Eton parish baptism record image - trouble finding!
« on: Saturday 15 July 23 06:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I've managed to find a baptism record for an ancestor baptised in Eton in 1820 (George Bampton) - record found on FindMyPast (transcription only).

However, I'm hoping to view the original parish record image and can't seem to locate a repository online where they might be available.

Ancestry and FamilySearch don't even appear to have this baptism in their database at all. As mentioned, FindMyPast only has the transcription.

I've searched across a few genealogy guide websites (including FamilySearch wiki for Buckinghamshire) but I haven't had any luck finding a possible avenue for consistent coverage of the transcriptions, let alone the original images.

Do they exist and are they publicly available? Hoping somebody can help me out!

Thanks for your help!

P.S. My key question is finding out George Brampton's age/DOB, and I'm hoping the baptism image will offer this detail. Based on other records, I have a suspicion he was around 2-3 years old when he was baptised, but I'm hoping to verify this. If you happen to know this bit of information, that makes things even easier! 😊

Australia / SA Cheltenham Cemetery photos wanted - Bampton & Finn
« on: Thursday 13 July 23 07:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi Adelaideans

I'm looking for headstone photos for the following people (from Cheltenham Cemetery).

I'm hoping someone out there has some! Both sites have been redeveloped and there are no photos available when I've searched FindAGrave, Google and Ancestry.

Also, if you happen to know any more about these people than what I've shown below (particularly about their pre-emigration Ireland lives, or what happened to John Finn), that would be hugely helpful!

Bridget Ann(e) Bampton (nee Finn)
  • Born about 1850/1851 in Ireland
  • Emigrated to SA aboard the Stamboul in 1858, from Tipperary, Ireland
  • Married Joseph Robertson Bampton in SA in 1866
  • Died 14 Feb 1883, age 32

Nora(h) Finn (nee Unknown)
  • Bridget's mother
  • Full first name was Honora
  • d. 23 Oct 1898 in Queenstown (age 88, per death record, or about 73, per immigration record)
  • Emigrated to SA in 1858 aboard the Stamboul, from Tipperary, Ireland
  • Husband was John Finn, but we don't know what happened to him - except for the fact that he died before Nora
  • Her newspaper funeral notice referred to her burial as Woodville Catholic Cemetery, but the old gravesite shows as Cheltenham Cemetery on ACA. I'm not familiar with the Woodville Catholic Cemetery and whether it was a section of Cheltenham Cemetery or otherwise.

It's not clear whether Bridget and Nora were buried together (Bridget's husband Joseph Robertson Bampton didn't pass away until 1904 - six years after his mother-in-law).

The Adelaide Cemeteries Authority database shows Nora's record but doesn't give a map location or site reference.

Thanks and crossing fingers!

This is a very good point, and makes sense as to why SA Archives (for example) doesn't list the Orient in its collection.

I just found a few other resources about the Orient line (not specifically related to passengers), and it seems to have been under the P&O company (until a later acquisition). Skim reading the results does seem to suggest it was a commercial passenger ship and not part of the government scheme.

Hi HistoricalGenealogy

I have a feeling this might turn out to be the case, though I'm retaining a sliver of optimism just in case! The one voyage I need...sigh  :-\
