Thanks Neil1821

What a great photo! One thing I noted straight away from seeing it is that my great grandfathers image has been reversed, something my wife had suspected. There is still no piping across the upper chest on this photo as there is on mine, but as it is a dress uniform do they differ greatly?

Military research is brand new to me and I am learning things all the time thanks to these posts.

Thanks Again

Brian

Hi All

I have been sent a picture of my great grandfather which was a photo inside a photo (if that makes sense). And have cropped it. I know its not that best but was wondering if you kind people would take a crack at colouring it for me.

Thank you all in advance
Brian

Thank you both so much for your replies and your help. The Sons of Galloway site is a brilliant resource and very informative as is the KOSBies official site, thank you.  I was hoping that the dress uniform could have given me a basic date for the photo. I was also hoping someone would have a picture of that particular dress uniform so I would know what it looked like.

My great grandfather could not have been that old. He joined at the age of 14 as an apprentice drummer in about 1904-5 (from his army number). He served with the 1st Bat. KOSB and can be found in Rhaniket, India in 1911. His name is also entered on several of the colours during this period (luckily he is the only T Dowson to have served in the KOSB). He left the service in 1919, unfortunately his full army records were burned so we will never have his full history.

This is 1 of only 2 photo's we have of him so it is a really important photo for the family.

Thanks again
Brian

Hi All

Not sure if this is the correct board for this.
I have a photo of a photo in a photo of my great grandfather (if that makes any sense). The original of this is no longer with the family, or at least none of this side, so I have no idea what it really looks like other than the image you see.
My great grandfather was in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers from a very young age (prior too and during WW1) and we believe he was trained as a drummer boy eventually reaching the rank of Drum Major. What would the uniform in this picture have looked like? Also would you have any idea when it would have been taken. I know this is a big ask as the photo is so bad and only shows the top half but any help would be truely appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Brian
