Thank you both so much for your replies and your help. The Sons of Galloway site is a brilliant resource and very informative as is the KOSBies official site, thank you. I was hoping that the dress uniform could have given me a basic date for the photo. I was also hoping someone would have a picture of that particular dress uniform so I would know what it looked like.
My great grandfather could not have been that old. He joined at the age of 14 as an apprentice drummer in about 1904-5 (from his army number). He served with the 1st Bat. KOSB and can be found in Rhaniket, India in 1911. His name is also entered on several of the colours during this period (luckily he is the only T Dowson to have served in the KOSB). He left the service in 1919, unfortunately his full army records were burned so we will never have his full history.
This is 1 of only 2 photo's we have of him so it is a really important photo for the family.
