Family History Beginners Board / Re: Can I locate a person by occupation?
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 16:11 BST (UK)  »
Again, difficult.
Jane was 44/45 years old at the time of Johns birth in 1923

Maybe James Arthur was a similar age, or he may have been older or younger. He was deceased by the time of Johns marriage in 1943.

Family History Beginners Board / Can I locate a person by occupation?
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 15:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi
the person I am looking for info about was James Arthur Brown.
He was listed as John James Browns father, on Johns marriage cert, although not listed on Johns birth cert.
James Arthur brown was listed as Municipal Laborer -Highways Dept (deceased), On Johns wedding cert.
Johns mother- Jane Oliver Brown was from South Shields. She was living in Rochdale at Johns birth(full address available).
Don't let the last name of Jane fool you.... she was previously wed to a Frederick Maughan Brown who appears to have died before Jane moved to Rochdale and had John.
What i would like to know is can James Arthur be traced through his occupation? How do I go about it?
Many thanks in advance.

Hello Jorose

Thank you for your interest.... when you get stuck any little piece is great!  :)

the info on Jane Oliver and Frederick Maughan Browns marraige is correct.
also john J Browns birth in 1923.  (I have those 2 certs)

Are the other Brown/Fairless births 2 separate families or just one which moved from Newcastle to Easington dist?  If all the births are to the same couple then as you say they cant be MY pair.  (Quite a lot of Fairless families in the Newcasle and Sheilds area at that time).

However theres not many Jane O Fairless'  I think ours seems to be the only one (or 2 in this case)..... sadly the death in 1918 looks like it could be Jane Oliver jnr.  (just as a 'by the way.'...on one of the census' they were both listed as Jennie Oliver Brown.....just to add to the confusion).
And again its more than likely than the Frederick M who died in 1919 was Janes husband. He was 29 on his marraige cert in 1900, making him born in around 1871, so   aged 48or 49 at this death

I havent tried James Arthur Brown by occupation. He is listed as Municipal Labourer/Highways Dept. on Johns marraige cert (also 'deceased' by then).
Also I havent found out yet who else was living at the address in Rochdale with Jane at the time of Johns birth.   53 Newbold Street Rochdale (sub district Castleton).

I'm afraid for some reason I am unable to download the Adobe program which would allow me to access certain records... Very frustrating >:( If there is any chance than anyone out there could help that would be brilliant.  :-*

Hi Casalguidi
Jane was from South Sheilds originally and Frederick was from Newcastle.
She gave birth to John James in 1923 in Rochdale. Have just about given up with James Arthur :'(

Hi Bob
Thanks for info will have a look.
Yes I think he was naturalised.
He was a very quiet man and it was always hard to pry info out of him.

Interestingly, i went on Cindyslist and infoukes and found that he would have been about 8 or 9 at the time of Stalins enforced famine on the people of the Ukraine. Michaels father was a farmer, so one can only guess at the trauma.
one other piece of info which I cant verify was that when I asked him what he did during the war, he said he was in Andersons Army.....wouldn't expand. But the info I found on Anderson's Army' didn't seem to fit with dads dates... ???

Hi
My step dad  Michajlo (AKA Michael) left the Ukraine when he was 16 ( around 1940).He never went back. :(  Lockerby (spelling) was one  place he mentioned.
How do I go about finding out where he first came to and other places he stayed at? ???
I would like to piece together a few 'Whys'  and 'Wherefores' for my brother in the main but also out of interest to myself. :)
