Norfolk / Re: CHRISTOPHER WILLIAM & SARAH SMITH married C1840's

Did you have the 1841 census record for Norton Smith snr?

Chamberlains Market Place Drapers Shop, St Peter Mancroft, Norwich, Norfolk

Also working in the same shop but not necessarily any connection...
Richard Ransome 15 not born Norfolk
Elizabeth Smith 25 born Norfolk
1841 census HO107 790/7 folio 20 page 32

Rembering that the 1841 is not accurate for ages, would this Elizabeth be about the same age as your Eliza?

I can answer the questions about the marriage. The marriage records list everyone who was married who has a record on the same page. If you are lucky, you know the name of the partner and there is only one person of the opposite sex with that name. But, on the page of the record for the Christopher William Smith who is likely to be the right one, there are the following people for Marriages Dec 1844 :
JOHNSON  Sarah    Wayland  13 930
SMITH  Christopher William     Wayland  13 930
SUTTON  Sarah     Wayland  13 930
TAYLOR  John     Wayland  13 930
TAYLOR  Sarah     Wayland  13 930
TURNER  Sarah     Wayland  13 930

What you would need to do to find out which is the right one is buy the certificate, which would cost about 12 pounds from the people in the UK.

I cannot find any record of birth for Norton or Christopher on the IGI. Like you, I assumed that Christpher William was a brother because he was listed as uncle to Norton jnr.

My family files are all linked together and I don't know how to separate them into separate sections of the family. But, I can get I GEDCOM for everyone...which would mean quite a lot of deleting for you! Is there a way to split the sections of the family up?

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / 1841, and possibly 1851, Susannah Cave
« on: Saturday 31 March 07 08:16 BST (UK)  »
A member of my family has a  'Susannah Cave, b. abt. 1830 in Cambridge, England' on our family tree. She married in 1852 in New Zealand. There is a Susannah Cave, dau of Susannah Dockerill Cave, b. 20 APR 1830   Thorney, Cambridge, England, as a submitted record in the IGI. I have no idea whether or not this is her, but it is the only Susannah Cave in Cambridgeshire at this time in the records.

It would help me if someone could look 'Susannah Cave' up on the 1841 census and possibly on the 1851 census. I have no idea when she came to New Zealand.

Thanks,
Ana

I would like to know where John Tunnard Mettam was on the 1861 census.
According to the free BDM index, he was born in 1853 in Sheffield, and his daughter's birth certificate lists his place of residence pre-emigration as Yorkshire. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1865. I don't have any family details, so, information from the census would be a real boon.

Thank you,
Ana

From the information that I have been able to gather about the St Thomas, Portsmouth records, there are no baptism records from that site, but there are plenty of Reynolds marriage records. I assume that baptisms are likely to have happened there, so the records not being there is a sign that they happened, but not be on the IGI. For this reason, I am not treating the Mary Reynolds baptisms on the IGI seriously.

Does this seem reasonable?
Is it likely that anyone using Rootschat would have access to baptisms at St Thomas, and would it be appropriate to ask for a lookup of this information just in case someone was well placed to do such a search?

Thanks,
Ana

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Johnson
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 22:24 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for this. I didn't know that the NBI existed! So many of my ancestors lead lives that seem to be as short and probably impoverished as these people. Very sad.

If you think that the son John Johnson might be findable on the 1841 census, it would be interesting to know who he was living with.

I have had a hunt for James senior's birth on the IGI and found a possible one in 1795 in Arnold, Nott, to a John and Rebecca. Can you think of any way that I could work out whether this might be correct? How far is Arnold from North Wheatley and Ragnall?

Sincere thanks for the help you have given me,
Ana

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Johnson
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 10:44 BST (UK)  »
It would help me if someone could look up James Johnson, whose parents were James Johnson and Susannah. They were married in Ragnall. When James came to New Zealand as a soldier in 1843, he described himself as 'of Ragnall' and said that he had been a labourer before becoming a soldier. He would have been born in the mid 1820s.

I do know that with a name like 'James Johnson', it may not be possible to single out one individual.

Thanks,
Ana
