« on: Thursday 10 January 08 11:04 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you Silvery

Yes I have tried that site, but is is for a much earlier period time

My son will be going to ther British Library (when they re-open) to see if he can find out more about the family. However, I would in the meantime love to contact anyone else who is researching the family in the hope that they be related
Thank you anyway for your suggestion.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Anyone researching this family???
« on: Saturday 15 December 07 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to discover more information about my gt uncle GEORGE NELSON GRANT, he was with the army until 1920 in Bombay India.
I have a photo of him with his family take in India, obviously after 1920 which shows a young child not mentioned in the army record, this could signify  that he had remarried (his wife had died previous to 1920 according to the army record)

I have obtained the birth cert of the eldest son, which shows that his mother Mary Jane, nee McCarthy orMcGuinness, was born in Malta.I may have difficulty in obtaining her birth cert as I do not know her m other`s name.

I know that the British library may have info about them and my son will be visiting there in January, being disabled I am unableto travel there myself, but in the meantime I would welcome any advice on anywhere else I could find information.

I know so far that he worked for the Central railway in Bombay, in the audit office, perhaps his son also worked there? his name was also George Nelson, he was in the army for a very brief period in 1915, from June until Sept when he was discharged ( I wonder why?, he was not wounded, I have his army record but it does not explain why he was discharged)

Two sets of twins were in the family, one of girls and one of boys (twins do run in my family)
I would dearly love to know if there are any descendants.

My gt uncle is on a passenger list for 1929 travelling back to Bombay after having been in England,
perhaps he had gone to visit family?

Possibly he remained in India and died there, but when? where else can I check for information about this?

Sadly my mother would never answer any questions about the family, and there are no living relatives now who may have known the answers, my only hope is in finding any descendants
Iam keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi
I do`nt think anyone of my generation will ever forget their Co-op number..
Ours was dinned in to me anyway, so I never forgot it, still remember it now
l4/730 and no matter how small an item was purchased, you gave your number and received a check, which I had to make sure was given to my mother.

Armed Forces / Re: Anglo Boer War Register

I thought when I saw this, og great, perhaps I can find my paternal grandfather, however, there are 36 names same as his.
I wouldnot begrudge paying £10 to obtain his ecord, but, how do I know which one is his! could be a very costly rdxercise tp track him down, especially as I do not have a clue what branch of the army he was in.

He lived in Greenock Scotland, so I am assuming he woujld have been in a Scottish regiment, in 1901 his wife said on the census that he was a reservist, and as he was missing, I assume he was away fighting in the Boer war, he did not die there, he died at home in 1913.

So how on earth do I trace what branch of the army he was in to have become a reservist???

I`m afraid being an OAP I`m too hard up to pay out a lot of money on a site that may or may not have any details of him,. So, I guess I`ll just have to keep on searching in the hope that one day he will turn up!

World War One / Re: Can anyone please help..
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you mmm45 for your repl;y

I looked up the para on the site you gave, does not really explain too much however, just saying that he could not be discharged under any other heading.
Still leaves me wondering

I did find his record on the pension list, it is surprising if he did receive a pension for such a very short time in the army!
I wonder what the actual reason could have been, but do`nt suppose I`ll ever find out

Snyway, thanks very ,much for your help, I will make a note of the site you gave in case it should ever be needed again.

World War One / Can anyone please help..
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Can someone please help me with this query, thank you.

I am trying to gather information concerning my gt uncle`s son who had joined the army, the Yorkshire Regt. in April 1915, (in India) he was passed fit in the medical exam, then in September 1915, he was discharged by his own request, and mentioned was para. 392(25) K.R.
His character was marked Fair, and comment was, Services no longer  required.
He was not wounded. What would the reason for his discharge have been?

He had been born and lived in India, where his father had been a long service soldier in the Wiltshire Regt.

Hello,
Thank you for the message re Joseph McCulloch.

I do not have my book to hand at the moment, so I`m not sure about that one.
I know that some of them were born in Glasgow, but whether this includes the Joseph you mention I`m not sure.

However, if you have a look at the McCullochs listed on my family tree on Tribal pages, you could see if there is a link or not, the number is
www.tribalpages.com/tribes/jarvisbarr

If you have any problems getting into the site, please let me know, the password to view is jarvisbarr.

If there is a link, I would be very pleased to know of it, and hope that you will let me know.
