World War One / Re: MOD can reissue returned WW1 medals
« on: Friday 15 December 17 10:52 GMT (UK)  »
thought i would share my good news,
following advise provided by members on here, i  applied for my grandads war medals via email, they responded the next day saying yes i can have them! and a few weeks later they arrived!

so thanks all

note to others if the medal card has annotation on it that might read "Rtd" (some times its is difficult to decipher annotations) it is worth just emailing a copy of the card to the medals office and they can confirm if the medals were returned for some reason and whether or not you can apply to receive them.

Hi jim

thanks that is great, we assume then if it is sent back for alterations that he must then have received them (no idea where they have ended up)

So it is defonately for alterations at not because he was found? (he moved around a lot!)

Hi MD

thanks for the posts all very helpful, unfortunately My Grandad died before i was born, the family also moved a lot with various children splintering off as they did so.

As far as i know there is no surviving personnel effects at all relating to him, we did not even have a photograph!

A follow up question, i was looking at the medal card (do you have access?) for him that i downloaded off ancestry and it has various annotations in the remarks section, I would post an image but unsure how, the insert image button just puts tome html tags in.

Do you know what any of these annotations mean?

Thanks for all the posts, very informative.

By asking questions then i can learn....

By asking questions in an open forum like this we can all learn...

Local history Groups in general are pretty good, but there focus usually comes from the focus of there general membership.

I know 4 or 5 different groups and none have any military focus, I gave a little talk at one a couple of weeks back and although the group membership had an excellent knowledge and personal experience of the war years, none had made it an area of research.

So you guy are an invaluable resource. Big pat on the back for everyone who contributes  :)

big update..

I just reviewed the record my sister found it actually had his regiment number on (probably did not mean any to her)

He was in the royal engineers rank driver - I since found out today that driver then meant "Horses" which makes a lot of sense as him and his brothers worked farms.

His reg no was 141460

Thanks for the reply guys

i did not suggest when they maybe have reconstructed them, just a general discussion on how complete they may have been and home much of has been digitized.

My general query was answered i suppose with the statement about the pensions, i was unsure who would be entitled, everyone or just those who ended up sick or injured.

As for the burnt records it says only available on micro fiche? is that still correct do you think? as that means there could be a lot more information still to be accessed if you can visit the archives?

or are they saying the search index for these is complete online and you have to visit the archives to see the contents?
