Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Christian Name Help. Please!
« on: Saturday 08 January 11 09:17 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you both.

My initial reaction was to plump for Jane, but the 'little hook' threw me a little greensleeves as well.

Here's a slightly larger sample where the 'hook' seems to crop up in two other places.

We'll see what transpires.

Hello Listers

I'm attempting to confirm the connection between my 9 x Great-Grandfather Henry WEAVER, bapt 12 August 1576 in Margaret Roding, to the STOKES family.

The connection appears to be via Henry's son John, bapt 1638 in Willingale Doe, thence John's daughter Susannah, bapt 3 February 1665/66 in Willingale Doe.  Susannah apparently married Abraham STOKES on 7 October 1690 in Roxwell.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance in confirming this link.

er ... Hello All.

May I join in?

It seems that Edith is my 3rd cousin twice removed.  We share the common ancestor Jonathan BREWSTER 1758 -  1812 of Good Easter, Essex (my 4 x Great-Grandfather). I really would like to know more about Edith.

I have fairly extensive information about the Good Easter BREWSTER family if anyone is interested.

Hello Sandymc

Nice to hear from you again.  I have to say that Wm James WARREN is certainly an enigma.

Apart from everything you've just covered (and by the sound of it you could be talking about my Wm James), my late Aunty Dot, to whom I owe a considerable amount family history wise, once told me that the family believed that Wm James "had another woman".  However, thus far, I have no evidence to substantiate this.

One thing does strike me as being a little odd though.  Wm James fathered seven children ostensibly with the same woman, Eliza Ann nee WATKINS.  The seven consisted of three boys and four girls with boys being born in 1876, 1878, and 1881.  Now the bit that strikes me as odd; there was a hiatus of five years before he started producing girls, who were born in 1886, 1889, 1891, and 1893.  Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but with the regularity of the two sections  of the seven births why have a five year break in the middle?

As I discovered very early in my family history hunt that each question answered seems to pose five or six more ...... ah well ............

Hello All,
Firstly, thank you all very much .... now where to start ..........

I tried with this one a while back now...
But never reached any firm conclusion... :-\

Thanks Romilly, but I thought I'd give the tree another shake and see what fell out. ::)

Thank you down-under ... I am aware of the 1861 - 1871 census returns, and have discounted the 1881 one you mentioned as 'not ours'.  The 1851 return is for Mary Ann's grand parents.  You pose the question; When did Eliza and William James wed? That unfortunately is one of the $64 dollar questions at the moment.  The first locatable mention of them, as a couple, is the birth of their first child, William Edward, in 1876 on the Isle of Wight. Any marriage record is elusive.  In fact this is the first locatable record of William James WARREN as well.

Thank you also Sandymc47 ..... John, the fatherless child, could indeed be Mary Ann's!

In the wash-up what I really need is Mary Ann's (or Maryann's) birth record, marriage record, and death record, without having to purchase every WATKIN's certificate.

Regards and Thanks to you all ..

Wiltshire / WATKINS of Highworth
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 06:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, and a happy new year, to all.

My maternal great grandmother was, prior to marriage, Eliza Ann WATKINS. Eliza Ann was apparently born in Kent, but her father, Edward WATKINS,  was born (on 2 November 1834)  into what seems to have been a fairly extensive WATKINS clan in Highworth.

My problem is that great grandma, and her husband William James (or just James) WARREN, were rather 'shadowy' in early and latter parts of their lives.  The middle part, I'm happy to say, is well documented.

Consequently I'm hoping that someone may have the Highworth WATKINS' in their research, and can possibly shed some light on Eliza Ann.

Essex / COMPLETED: G H BREWSTER - Titanic
« on: Sunday 19 December 10 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
keldon, thank you very much for that info, very, very helpful.

It appears that George H. was my 3rd cousin twice removed, and his father, Thomas, was born in Good Easter in 1837.

Looks like another loose end tied up.

Thanks again .....

Hello All

George H BREWSTER was a Bedroom Steward onboard RMS Titanic when it sank in 1912. He did not survive, and his body was never recovered.

Titanic records show that he was married, and was born in Essex in 1863 or 64.

Can anyone tell me if George H BREWSTER has a connection with the, rather prolific, Good Easter Brewsters.
