London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Marriage Witnesses – Rules COMPLETED
« on: Monday 15 September 08 17:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone happen to know what the regulations were (say London, early to mid 19th century) regarding witnesses to a marriage?  Who could, who couldn't, minimum age etc.?  Could the father of one of the principals act as a witness?  Presumably the definition of ‘Full Age’ changed over the years.

Thanks

London and Middlesex / Re: Sue Daniels researching Ernest Sidney Rapp

Hi Dawn,

You are quite right.  She posted an enquiry in 2006 on Genes Reunited.  This looked very likely to be connected to my research but I responded only recently, with no reply.  Genes R thinks she may no longer be a member.  A 'direct' email via GR failed too.

She is obviously doing her family history and I hoped this might reach her.

Hi Dawn,

Many thanks for that, the 1722 entry must be the one referred to, so at least that is eliminated.

Just out of interest, do the Boyd's entries show the location etc.?  It's probably the same family.

Cheers

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Pre 1837 Marriage Look up please
« on: Tuesday 15 July 08 13:52 BST (UK)  »

I have the 1839 (St. Luke’s) marriage details for Samuel Wedge & Martha Groves but I believe he was previously married to a Sarah who died in 1837.  This Samuel WEDGE marriage was possibly found either in:
Marriage Licence Allegations Index 1701 – 1850, or,
Boyd’s Marriage Index 1538 – 1840.

Is anyone please able to let me know the full details or tell me where I can get them?

Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Births at Cow Lane, Shadwell.
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 16:10 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Casalguidi,

Where did you find that link?  It makes very sobering reading; my ancestors lived in and around that address at that time.

Yes, I've found locations on the censuses, there are a couple of people listed as 'Lodging House Keeper' in adjacent properties but nothing specific as far as I could tell hence the appeal for others’ findings.

Kind regards

If a mother couldn’t give birth to a child where she lived would she go to another local house where friends or family lived?  I realise she would have to go somewhere but were certain houses used like this before Lying-in Hospitals were set up?

Has anyone found births occurring at Cow Lane, Shadwell – especially at No. 1, in the 1840s & 1850s but  where this address doesn’t agree with the normal place of residence?

I have the 1841 and 1851 census occupancies for these addresses.

Thanks

Thanks Jennifer,

It does help although I did know the two locations were next to/on top of each other.  What I can't establish is if the two No. 8s are one and the same. I hadn't heard of the 1799 London Street Index; does this give house numbers too?

Can anyone assist with the following please?
I realise extended families could have moved around a lot and these places are/were very near each other.
What appears to be the same family is recorded at the following addresses:

1. A baptism (birth 22 April 1848) 04 August 1848. Address: 1 Cow Lane, Shadwell.
2. A baptism (birth 07 March 1842) 06 September 1850. Address: 2 Angel Gardens, Shadwell.
3. A baptism (birth 22 January 1845) 06 September 1850. Address: 2 Angel Gardens, Shadwell.
4. Census 31 March 1851 Address: 8 Martins Buildings, Shadwell.
5. A birth 01 July 1851. Address: 8 Milk Yard, Shadwell.
6. A death 07 September 1851. Address: 8 Milk Yard, Shadwell.
7. A birth 10 November 1852. Address: 1 Cow Lane, Shadwell.
8. A baptism (birth 10 November 1852) 15 December 1852. Address: 1 Cow Lane, Shadwell.

Does anyone know if 8 Martins Buildings is in fact 8 Milk Yard? The 1851 census does not show a number 8 Milk Yard separately.

Regarding parish baptismal records.  Does anyone know the procedure as it might have occurred at the time?

Q. I presumed that the parish recorded the baptism at the time it took place (I assumed the baptism took place in the parish church say, and that's where the record book was).  If not, is there a way of establishing the date event was recorded rather than just the date of the event? Perhaps from the ’Entry’ and ‘ID’ numbers.

Q. Was the address given the ‘current’ one rather than where they were living when the child was born (or baptised)?

Q. Was the mother’s name given the ‘current’ one rather than the birth mother of the child?
