Thanks Justin,

I think I'm going to have to be patient and wait for the marriage certificate to arrive and hope it gives some more insights into this family, if they are Jewish so many records have been destroyed over the years the most we can hope for is that belief that the family came from the Eastern Med area, whether they were European and traders in Iraq or actual Iraqi citizens of whichever religion. but thanks both for your help. Vicky

Hi Im trying to research John Nahum Farage, possible born 1858 in Baghdad. I posted this in under 'Europe' forum on Rootschat - (so sorry for the duplication) as I initially thought he was born to European parents in Baghdad, I have sent for his marriage certificate to find out what his father's name is - but this will take a while to arrive. From the other post have since found out he could be either from Baghdad's Jewish Community due to his name - or from the name of one of his daughter's 'Mena Ferida" he could also be from a Muslim background. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for research as I have never searched in this geographical area before. Thanks Vicky

Sadly there was no record for John in the naturalisation records. I asked my friend (its her tree I'm helping to research)  and she said there were no rumours or knowledge of Jewish Ancestry but one of her older relatives did look as though they could have had Jewish ancestry.... not sure this helps. I'm going to search for some Jewish ancestry forums to see if anyone on there has come across this name. Thanks for your help.

JustinL - Ooo thanks I didn't know that. I will have a look at Jewish records. I'd completely forgotten about naturalisation records doh - will look this afternoon.. although my grt grandad didn't bother when he came over from Germany about the same time. He had five children although a daughter Mena Feride seems to be the only one to have an unusual name, there was another daughter whose name was Winifred but spelt Winefride.

Yes, that's what I am also wondering... I've searched under Nahum Farage and John Nahum as well but not been lucky. It could also be he had another surname but adopted Farage to 'fit in'. I'm sure I've read somewhere that they name their children like the Welsh where they take father's name as a surname - so he could be John son of Nahum if you see what I mean. The adopted Farage at a later date.

Hi his name is John N Farage, he marries in 1888 in Chorlton Lancashire. Ive searched google to see if he's on any trees and came up with a blank. I've sent for his marriage certificate to see what he's put down as his fathers name. Farage isn't an Ottoman/Iraqi name but I've read that they didn't have surnames in the Iraqi region until quite late 1900's and then they adopted European sounding names as their surnames. Frustratingly you need a Turkish citizen number to ask for a search of their "Pedigree information". My hope is that his father is European so I can search that line - however if his mother most likely Middle Eastern then I will come unstuck.

Hi, I have a chap who says in 1911 census he was from Baghdad and in 1901 he was a Turkish citizen. He must have come over to England between the 1881 census and 1888 when he married in England. I have sent for the marriage certificate but with the current situation it will take a while to arrive so whilst I was waiting I thought I would ask you lovely people if there is any chance of being able to research Turkish or Iraqi records at all? Was thinking with the fall of the Ottoman Empire and then the various wars and conflicts in the Middle East since this time that the likelihood of any surviving records is fairly slim - is this correct?? Thanks Vicky
