Northumberland / Re: Public executions @ Morpeth.

As Stan says Morpeth New Gaol opened 1828 closed 1881. This stood on the site of the recently demolished petrol station/car showroom.
Before 1828 a House of Correction stood on the site. The still standing clock tower served as a sometime jail for thieves .

Hi, condemned  prisoners from Morpeth Gaol were hung at Fairmoor, which is near enough the site of Northgate mental hospital.
There is a list of Northumberland executions somewhere, i can't put my hands on it at the minute.
Northumberland Assizes were held in Newcastle(being the county town) As for Morpeth being county town, thats still a can of worms   ;D

Hi Brewman, i can see the marriage of Matthew and Ann on the IGI. The record states that Matthews father was also Matthew.
I can't see Matthews baptism in Throckrington parish records.

Northumberland / Re: 1911 Census - Deuchan Terrace, Hirst, Ashington

Michael, by 1924 Deuchar Tce was renamed Newbiggin Rd.
Being colliery houses, i imagine they were built 1890-1900, so will have been called Deuchar for a good while. ( i have a great book which dates the building of streets, names of original tenants etc. but cannot put my hands on it at the minute)
Due to the massive expansion and Ashington getting its own Urban Council, street names were changed on a regular basis, which must have caused as much havoc then as it causes confusion now.  I never did find out why Mersey,Humber and Tweed Terraces were renamed after trees, leaving only Pont remaining

Very close Michael, Deuchar Tce ran between Milburn Rd and North Seaton Rd. On a modern map it's the terrace on the north side of Newbiggin Rd.
At the time of the census it was the only street of houses to the left of Milburn Rd in Hirst.
