Armed Forces / Re: 82nd Foot/ 2nd Foot in 1815

Thanks Ken,

You are correct - he joined the 82nd in 1808 from the Cumberland Militia for 7 years and was discharged in Canada  when that period expired. I suppose the army was responsible for getting him home but quite why he enlisted again in the 2nd Foot is a mystery. From what I can see several others from the 82nd enlisted in the 2nd Foot around that time. Perhaps it seemed a good idea at the time particularly with the promotion from Corporal to Sergeant. I may look into where the 2nd were destined for in their next deployment- perhaps it was somewhere none too pleasant. This may have had something to do with his desertion.

Thanks again

Armed Forces / 82nd Foot/ 2nd Foot in 1815

An ancestor Alexander Cowan served in the 82nd Foot and was discharged in Canada on 4 February 1815 having completed 7 years service for which he enlisted. I next find him in online records as having enlisted in the 2nd Foot at Portsmouth on 9 August 1815, he is promoted to Sergeant on the same day and is listed as having deserted from Haslar Barracks on that day also.
Can anyone speculate as to what is happening here? By the way he was back in Sunderland in April 1816 as a labourer. A newspaper report has him being charged for stealing some butter from a warehouse where he worked!

Thanks

Kirkcudbrightshire / Richardson MI - Troqueer

Some years ago I bought the book for MI's for Troqueer and neighbouring parishes. However on now wanting to revisit some previous research I find that I have mislaid it.  I am interested in a MI which records the names of Richardson, Pringle and Wait. I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to let me know the information on this particular grave.

Many thanks,

Bill

Hi Jan

Thanks for the really quick reply. Yes that is him. I just wonder if any further information is given e.g. occupation or a family connection.

I have a Malcolm Davidson in my tree who was married to Christiana Gillespie in Montrose in 1807. From the OPR's it would seem that he was born on the 16 April 1778 at Nowbeg, Kingussie and was the son of another Malcolm Davidson and Ann McPherson. Malcolm came to Sunderland c.1810 and died there in 1830. I would be grateful if anyone could let me know if his migration was likely to have been brought about by the clearances or was Montrose and other places further afield simply an economic draw for a young man at the time.

Thanks in anticipation.

Bill
