Hello atom12,Thanks for help.Is there any way I can access this information?on line or by contacting somebody?I think I saw a medal for a Patrick Toal on ancestry.co.uk but, in view of the desertion theory, disregarded it!I know his brother Peter got two medals and died from the effects of mustard gas as a young man.Any advice you can give will be very much appreciated. Jos

Thanks for reply. His name was Patrick Toal, born Co Monaghan 1887.Family stories suggest he was conscripted while working in Scotland, deserted and was "on the run" even years later. He was last seen by a relative in Belfast 1930s when he was using another name.Makes it a bit hard to trace his death even.Which name would it be registered under?I dont know why he did not return to Ireland to escape conscription, maybe he had no money!  I know he had no close family,He was orphaned young and had to make his way as best he could.

Australia / Re: emigrant to australia

many thanks for your interest.I live in Belfast and am not familiar with Australian sources.Patrick marlow was my grandmothers brother.I just could not find him apart from on familysearch.com,the 1881 census of England which shows a soldier of this name serving in Liverpool.(there are two old photos of soldiers from that period in the family)Then I saw an entry on Genforum where someone has confused Patrick with a Morris Patrick Marlow, also born Aughnacloy who emigrated to Australia.I posted a reply and they were to get back to me but have not done so.It is clear that the person researching patrick knows something of the family but not enough to be a direct descendant. It also seems as though they live in Australia.I believe death certificates in Australia can show the parents names, and they have these correct.I know there are descendants of James Henry marlow(Patricks brother)living in Australia but they will not have the Marlow name since the people who emigrated were female and married.Any advice would be appreciated. josey ;)
