The Lighter Side / Re: Electoral registers released

Hope others are having better luck than me

Well a unconfirmed family rumour that gt grandad spent time as a guest of His Majesty, possibly in the early 1930s, has acquired a little more momentum because gt grandma is registered alone in 1931. hmmm  :-X.

Can't find either of them in any other year.

There is another variation, which is Administration with Will which happens when the Executors named in the Will have all died or resigned.  In this case you also get the Will when you send off for the Grant.  The one real case I have seen of this also came with a lot of paperwork connected with the appointment of administrators which included daughters' married names and addresses - but I think I got lucky there.

But have ordered the marriage certificate (£12.00!!!).

That doesn't seem right. £12 is for a certified copy. If the marriage is before 1937 (which IIRC it was when I looked) then you can just use credits to view the register entry.

Total lack of understanding of the need for infection control contributed to the high number of  maternal deaths from septicemia - with midwives & doctors carrying the infection from mother to mother. There was a significant epidemic in 1874-6 which killed 2 of my gg grandmothers. You were safer in a small village being delivered by your own mother or sister.

If a woman is moderately undernourished, breastfeeding is a pretty effective contraceptive.  She is unlikely to become pregnant again until she weans her child.  (There are quite a few references out there to 'lactational amenorrhea' if you want the technical details).  It doesn't really work for the well fed mother who ends up with a baby every 18 months or less.

If you register you can use the 'Source Box' - which seems to work like Ancestry's Shoebox but with the advantage that you can create subfolders.

I have one GRO certificate where the bride's and groom's addresses have been transposed.  They married within 3 months of a census so I'm reasonably sure this is what happened.
