Wiltshire / Westbury Leigh - August visit Help
« on: Thursday 10 July 08 03:30 BST (UK)  »
I get to spend a couple of days in Westbury and Westbury Leigh next month (whilst visiting from Canada).  I am desperately trying to find out if anyone can tell if the places my ancestors lived are still there or knocked down?  They were the ALLEY family and lived in both villages as well as Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Hawkeridge and later Swindon.

1861 census shows William Alley and family at:  Flour Mill, Westbury Leigh
1871 census shows him as baker/grocer on Leigh Street, Westbury Leigh - I think the bakery was there til the early 1900s
William's son, Thomas Alley, ran the bakery and grocery store until about 1915.  He was also a "special constable" (not sure what this means ???)

Grandson of William named Herbert Alley was a glove maker and lived at St Quentin, Station Road, Westbury (could St Quentin be a house or business name?)

1947 another relative was living at 30 Leigh Road, Westbury Leigh.  She was a "pupil teacher" and a "National School" can someone explain what this means please?

This I found in a will - Provison, Corn and Salt  Stores, Market Place, Westbury - any ideas?

I would really appreciate any help offered.  This is such a short visit that I want to try and see as much as possible and plan ahead to save time.

Thanks KayP

Wiltshire / Re: Westbury Leigh - Baker's shop

Hi Liverpool Lass:

Yes, I have checked out the website and it is fascinating.  I get caught up in looking at the photos from the different towns and villages.  Unfortunately it did not really help me in finding the bakery/grocer's shop.

Thanks anyway, Kay

Wiltshire / Westbury Leigh - Baker's shop
« on: Friday 14 March 08 23:21 GMT (UK)  »
From about 1871 to after 1901 my ancestors had a bakery/grocery shop in  Westbury Leigh.  The first was William ALLEY (married 3 times -Emma Keates, Elizabeth Minty, , Hannah Hales) and then his son Thomas (married to Elizabeth Humphreys) took over.  After that Thomas's son Norman (married to Florence Leybourne) took over until his death in 1918.

I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of "old" Westbury Leigh and would know if such a shop was or know anything of the ALLEY family around that time.  William was a church elder and Thomas was apparently the local constable.  I suppose I need the help of a local historian.

I am have a day or so to spend in Westbury Leigh this summer and would like as much information about the village/town as possible.  Any help very much appreciated.

Thanks Kay

Thanks for checking out the death certificate.  The more I look at it the more I do think that James's mother's MS was Brown.  I will check out SP and see if I can find any more information on John and Margaret and their wedding, etc.

I have tried to attach the death certificate so you can see the mother's maiden name for James Cowan who died 1864 and is the first entry.  Father is quite clearly John Cowan and mother Margaret and I think her surname could be BROWN.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks Kay

Hi Nenny4

Thank you for the suggestion but I can't make out the mother's maiden name on his death certificate to be GRAY.  Of course his father could have married more than once but then that would confuse things even more.   :-\

Thanks Wildgoose but I don't think that is my James as he seems to have been in Penicuik most of his life.

Hi Hume24

The death certificate is really hard to read for the mother's maiden name but looking at others on the same page it looks like her name could be Margaret BROWN.  Unfortunately I cannot find a marriage between John Cowan and Margaret Brown.

I am pretty sure that his parents were not John Cowan and Margaret Veitch (even though John was a shoemaker just like my James's father) because there is an entry on the same register page for a daughter, Marion, of John and Margaret (nee Veitch) Cowan and this woman was age 90 when she died in 1864.  Also the Veitch is quite easy to make out and does not look like the name written on my James's certificate.

So it looks like I am stuck once again  ???

Thanks for your help, Kay
