Monaghan / Re: Irish Times Ancestors website - a good research tool?
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Thank you so much, Shane and Aghadowey. I did not expect so much valuable informaton in such a short time, you are the greatest!

Edward John's father Edward Richardson was High Sheriff of Co Monaghan in 1871.

Lots of reading and drawing of provisional family trees to do now in order to keep pace with your info  :)

Yes, I had located the birth of child Richardson in 1874, with parents Edward and Anne Charlotte Adams.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Shane. Yes, that's what I thought.

I am trying to trace the whereabouts and life of Major Edward John  Richardson, died 1938, born ~ 1873, Co. Monaghan. Father is Edward Richardson, also Co. Monaghan
I found an EJ Richardson in the 1901 census, 26 years old, single, occupation "Lieut 5th Btn Royal Irish Fus. and J.P. (Active List)" and presume that this is the one.
I cannot find the father or any other family members because that's all the details I have so far.

Maria
PS. Stupid question; what does J.P. stand for, please.

I am considering subscribing to the Irish Times Ancestors website. Having browsed the introduction I am pretty confused as to what informartion I may glean, and their 'payment in units' system confuses me even more. At this stage their instructions are goobledegook to me.

Like with all search engines, one has to work with them for a while to be better at getting useable hits, but with ITAncestors even a general search to get results costs 1 unit.
I may have used up all my pre-paid units in finding my way around, without even getting to any relevant records.
Can someone tell me if it is worth my while or do you have any tips regarding getting the most value for my money?

Thanks!
Maria

Further question re ordering research records/copies.
Can the GRO also supply copies of records for Irish citizens from other collections, namely Ireland-VR, Ireland-EASy and Ireland-ODM?

Maybe they have a built-in "You are timed-out" feature but they don't tell us and say'unable to display results' instead?

Same thing happening to me. I then go and delete my browsing history and cookies and try again. But it is still more or less potluck.
I find the best time to search is in the wee hours of the morning when everybody else seems to be asleep  ;D
Using the Advanced Search features seems to work better, even if you want to start a new search and leave most of the fields blank.

Dublin / Re: Francis Carter, Esq, Vicar's Field, Co Dublin or Wicklow
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 00:51 BST (UK)  »
Thank you, LH.
At the moment I have to familiarise myself with the locations and the two Carters and see if they could be related or even the same. It's hard when one has to start from scratch.
The problem is that I am not so much focused on his genealogy / ancestors but his personal life. And this is something that is unfortunately not very much reflected in vital records. It usually means trawling through the news of those days; a very time consuming job, especially when one has a very slow internet coinnection  :(

The info that came through here has certainly helped already. Thanks!

I think I will have to dig deep into the history of these two Mr Carters, what with 'Carter Cottages' as an address as well.
Lots to work on now.

Thanks again.

Yes, why not. It might bring a few more responses re the gentleman himself.
I think he was not RC, I found a Mr Carter, 1857, from Loughlinstown and perhaps the whole family, as having given donations to the 'Island and Coast Society', some kind of Protestant Misson.
Thanks.

WOW!! Shane, I am impressed by your expertise and knowledge where to look for information! Thank you so very much. The first google book link was the one that I had seen and why I asked, but I had not seen the Slater's directory listing.

Now I know where I can start searching. Great.
