Yes, very sad. Or even the place of birth, as some tombstones do, would have been wonderful.

There are early assessment lists for the area where Samuel Harrison and Susan Brighton married. I was there on a trip in 2000 and went thru them on microfilm at the library looking for Harrisons, but found none. A cousin had already sent me the Brighton info. from them and I did see that.

John Brighton is on the 1851 and 1861 census records in the Waterloo, Ontario area. I borrowed the 1851 census on inter library loan many years ago, but now it is on ancestry.com and other websites as well.

Very few passenger lists for Canada that early. And don't see any possibilities on the US passenger lists on ancestry. Should check other websites again.

Also waiting for results of a 67 marker DNA test for my brother. Hoping to get some clues from that.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for checking those websites for Samuel A. Yes, mine definitely died in 1862 in the Civil War. Harrison is such a common name that also makes it a difficult search.

Thanks, Carol

I have some records that show Samuel with the middle initial A. Other places it just has Samel woth no initial.

I believe from his tombstone he was born 10 March, 1821, but I have no idea when he was baptised.

Hi Ben,

Good idea, thanks. I've tried that a little, but sometimes difficult to tell if they are the same Samuel in the birth or baptism record. It might help to eliminate a few. I do have ancestry.com, so it's easy to check the census. I doubt my Samuel was still in England in 1841, marrying in Ontario in 1842, but he could have been. I've never been able to find a Samuel on a passenger list that seemed to be mine either.

I have tried to use the names of Samuel and Susan's children as clues also. I think Samuel's middle initial was A. Wife, Susan's parents were John Brighton and Sophia Edwards and I have her sibling's names: Charlotte, Richard, Elizabeth, Harriet, Mary, Robert and Sarah. Samuel and Susan's first child was a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, and next was Henry Albert. Then John James, Richard Edward, Harriett Sophia, Annetta Maria and Sarah Louette. I think Henry Albert may be the one most significant--maybe his father or grandfather or a combination.

Thanks again. Carol

The info, I have on the marriage is from the Civil War pension record filed for by Susan, his widow. She states they were married 22 May, 1842 by Rev. Frederick Bindemann in Canada West (Rev. Bindeman lived near the Brighton family in Waterloo, but he also travelled around) and she knew of no public record of the marriage. There is a book of marriages by Rev. Bindemann, but it doesn't include Samuel and Susan. I have searched various marriage books, but have never found the record.

Yes, there are several Samuels on the IGI that could be the right one. I have searched some of the parish records and been on mailing lists for some of the locations. I'll have to look to see if I've checked them all. Problem is also not all the parish records are on the IGI. I've also checked parish records for a couple of possible families from info. I've found in New York, etc. with no luck so far. About 30 years of searching, but not full time of course.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Ben,

I'm sorry, I guess I should have given more information on Samuel. He married Susan Brighton in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in 1842. Susan was born in Ilketshall St. Andrew, Suffolk Co., England in 1823, but went to Ontario with her family in 1835, age 12. Samuel could be from the same area or anywhere in England. Later in 1842 Samuel enlisted in the U.S. Army for 5 years in Buffalo, New York. After that time he received a land warrant and he got land in Brown Co., Wisconsin. The 1850 and 1860 census there list him born in England.

When the Civil War started in 1862 Samuel joined the Army again. He was wounded and died soon after in the Battle of Corinth in Mississippi in Oct., 1862. He was buried in DePere, Brown Co., Wisconsin. I subtracted his age when he died shown on his tombstone from his date of death to get his birth date. I've never been able to find any parents or siblings for him.

Thank you and anyone for any information you can provide. Carol
